Notations on Ralph Reames family

When Ralph was a youngster, his father told him to plant peas in the corn rows. Ralph was told to not waste any peas. Ralph started dropping the peas in the corn rows, but that was too slow. When his father wasn't looking, he would throw a big handful out in the grass at the end of the rows. When it rained the peas came up and Ralph got an education he remembered.

At the age of sixteen Ralph married Dollie Mae Lee. When he asked for her to be married, her father told him he thought he was a little young, but Ralph just answered, "But I'm big."

About 1936 Ralph purchased a 1922 Model-T Ford Blue Racer. Gasoline was ten cents a gallon and kerosene was five cents a gallon, so they would buy a gallon of each and mix it to run the car and they would always take four or five extra to church. If the car wouldn't pull up the mountain, some would get off and push. Since there was no fuel pump, gasoline fed to the carburetor by gravity flow. If they got on a very steep hill and the gas was low in the tank they would turn around and back up the hill; otherwise, it would stop feeding gas to the carburetor.

A good portion of Ralph's life has been spent in the Paris area, especially on Rich Mountain where his father ran a sawmill. He grew up loving the woods and nature and is still an ardent sportsman. He was a businessman in Paris until 1969 when he and Dollie moved to Russellville where he was the franchise owner of Handy Dan Ice Company until his retirement in 1979. They presently live on Rich Mountain.
