This project was carried out for Super Tanneries, Kanpur.
The purpose of the project was to design a die for a given toe cap. This die is to be attached on the top of an existing compression molding die used for making soles. In this, outer surfaces the toe and surfaces of the existing die were scanned separately. In Figure 4.3(a) scanned data of toe-cap is given. Spherical probe of diameter 0.25" was used for scanning in both the cases. One curve was scanned in both the scans, which was used for registration later. This common curve was scanned using point probe. To register both the point clouds both files were opened in the same viewport and with the help of common curves registration was completed. Before starting surface generation, points that were scanned using spherical probe were offseted by a distance of 0.125", which is equal to the radius of spherical probe.
Now surfaces were generated on the point cloud of toe and point cloud of die surfaces. Scanned data with wireframe surface model for toe-cap is shown in Figure 4.3(b). This wireframe model and rendered model of the toe-cap are given in Figure 4.3(c) and Figure 4.3(d) respectively.
Using these surfaces the die for the toe-cap was designed. Figure 4.3(e) is included to show the point cloud of the outer surfaces of the die with the wireframe surface model.
This surface model of die was exported to Delcam software to generate
the g-code. This g-code was fed to a CNC machine to machine the required
die. Figure 4.3(f) shows the machined die for the toe-cap.
