Organization of the Thesis

In the present era it has been observed that many industries want to reproduce the part for which drawings are not available to them. Hence in the present work the applications of Reverse Engineering for different usage in industrial environment has been elaborated. Various examples from the industries comprise the explanation.

In the first chapter different areas of different applications are highlighted. Literature on the current hot topics of research of Reverse Engineering and some work, which has been carried out in the past but relevant to this work is included to prepare the background of this work. Reverse Engineering theoretically seems to be quite simple but while actually implementing, lot of expertise is required, mainly to digitize the component going to be Reverse Engineered. Digitizing is more important also since it directly affects the accuracy.

Chapter 2 deals with various techniques of digitizing the component. Since FARO arm was used for carrying out the different case studies so it has been explained in detail.

Once the part is digitized then this data can be used either for generation of a CAD model or after triangulation it can be exported to CAM or Rapid Prototyping software. Chapter 3 deals with the process of surface generation. Since Imageware’s SURFACER software was extensively used for surface generation so it has been explained in detail. A step by step procedure is also given to generate Class-A surfaces from the digitized data.

In Chapter 4 some case studies has been included to explain the process. These were projects from various industries, which were completed. In the first three case studies CAD model has to be obtained from the digitized data. In one such case study a shoe last has been scanned in multiple scans and registration was done to complete the model. In another case, CAD to Part inspection has to be done for a Pelton bucket, which is obtained by Rapid Tooling.

In the last chapter conclusions and scope for future work has been explained. So in all the whole procedure for Reverse Engineering is explained with several examples.
