Chapter 10

"What do you think you're you doing Nick!?! Are you out of your mind? You can't drive! You don't even have your learners? How stupid are you???" I was screaming at the top of my lungs while I outstretched the seat belt and unbuckled it. No way was Nick going to stop this car, and no way was I going to stay in it with him.

"Chill, nothing's going to happen Amanda."

"Chill? How can I chill you maniac?!? That's it." I unlocked my door but he quickly locked it again.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going to jump. I'll be alright."

"No!" I unlocked my door once more and he relocked it.

"Nickolas Gene Carter, I'm not going to stay in this car, or any car with you unless you have at least your learners so don't try to stop me!" I unlocked my door and took a breath as I was about to pull the lever to open my door.

"Wait. There's something here in my pocket. It feels kinda square...kinda like a learner's permit." He pulled out the id and I immediately snatched it from him.

"You jerk!" I smacked him once and then did it a few more times. "But, you aren't even supposed to be driving without a parent or someone over 25 years old. At least you have this though. Gosh."

"Don't worry, I'm just circling the block and then we'll be back at my house. I just wanted to freak you out a bit." A bit? Nick was going to get it, I swear. I have no clue what I'm going to do but he's going to get it bad.

The car slowly pulled back up into the driveway, just as it had been before we left.

Nick turned off the car and I hit him again.

"You jerk! I can't believe you!" I was smiling and so was he.

Nick quickly locked his door and shut it right before he got up and ran to get away from me.

"I'm gonna get you! You better run!" I locked my door, closed it, then ran after my best-friend.

I chased Nick through the front yard all the way to the backyard, but he was too fast for even me. I lost site of him within a minute and I could not figure out where he was. All I knew is he was gone.

I quietly tiptoed all around the boats, checking each one to make sure he wasn't in them or behind them. No Nick.

"Alright Nick, you won. Come out." I waited silently and no Nick. "Okay...you win Nick! I admit it! You're the master of tricks and pranks! And you can run faster than me! Come out!" I stood perfectly still, but the only thing I could hear was my heart as it thumped over and over again.

I walked on the deck and looked out to every angle but he was nowhere in site.

"Where are y-" I started but before I could finish my sentence, I found him. Or maybe I should say he found me.

Nick tapped me on my shoulder and scared the crap out of me.

"Hi. Now what did you say? I what?" He wiggled his finger in his ear to pretend he couldn't hear me. "I'm the what? Did you say I'm the master of tricks? And that I can run faster than you? Huh?"

"Oh shut-up!" I went to smack him but he was too close to the edge of the dock and his balance wasn't correct. I tried to grab Nick before he fell into the lake but he grabbed me and we both fell in.

"Amanda! I'm gonna kill you!" he shouted with water in his mouth above the surface. We laughed while we dunked each other and threw water in each others faces.

"This is the most fun I've had since...since...since as long as I can remember Nick!" I shouted. We both calmed down and finally came to a stop at what we were doing.

"Me too," he said after awhile.

All of a sudden I started giggling slightly.

"What?" he asked. I began laughing uncontrollably. I couldn't stop!

"What!!" It took me a minute to calm myself to spit out words in between laughs.

"You know what?"

"What!"

"Look around us. Look at what we're swimming in." Nick took a look around and the smile on his face disapeared as did mine. We both looked around.

"Oh my goodness!" Nick and I looked at each other, when our eyes met we started laughing again. When we had finally calmed down we pulled ourselves up onto the dock and stood up.

"This is disgusting Nick."

"I know! We can spray ourselves down with the hose. C'mon."

We walked back into his yard and straight over to the hose. We didn't waste one second of our time washing off...verything. We were flithy!

"Here let me help you, Nick said as he began spraying my back side. "Good thing you have me here to help you."

"Psh, like I need you! I'm a woman! I can handle it all by myself!" Nick rolled his eyes at me and I dug into my pocket. "My money! It's soaked! Now how am I supposed to use it?"

"Just hang it up to dry, it'll be alright. Trust me, I've done it thousands of times."

I reached into my other pocket.

"Oh no, I said.

"What?" He turned off the hose and stared at me.

"My pager's gone."

"Really? Oh well. Not like it does any help when it's wet."

"You're right. No sense in looking for it. But what if my dad called? And what if he paged me! Oh gosh. And how am I going to explain that it's gone? Well...first we went driving around when we weren't supposed to, then we ran around and fell in the lake like a bunch of idiots and it's gone. Oh man."

"Oh yeah!" Nick shouted.

"Don't sound too excited."

"Oh no, not that. Maybe you left it in the car. It is a possibility."

"Nick, it was clipped on my pants, it didn't just come off in the car! I know my pager man."

"You know your pager? Okay...but c'mon, it doesn't hurt to look." I dragged my feet behind him, my shoes collecting more and more grass the farther we walked.

We walked over to the car and looked in the passenger window.

"See there it is! Now aren't you glad we looked afterall? If we didn't, my parents would find it and I'd get in mayjor trouble because they would know we were in here without permission."

"Well go get the car keys from inside and let's get it."

"I can't,." he said simply.

"And why not Nick?"

"Becase remember, they aren't inside. We never went inside. So, they must be in my pockets." Nick dug into his pockets and gasped. "Where are my keys?" He dug into them again and turned the empty pockets inside out.

"Uh oh. I thought my pager was a big deal, but your parents car keys, that's bigger. Where are they?"

"I don't know! Oh gosh, oh gosh, please let me find them." Nick felt inside of his pockets again and searched the ground around the car.

"Nick, this isn't funny. Jokes over man. You already got me once today, isn't that enough."

"Ha, ha! Does it look like I'm freaking laughing?!?" he said seriously.

"Oh no, you really are serious. Well, where are they?" I asked.

"Does it look like I know?" he snapped. Geez. It wasn't my problem he went driving without anyone's permission. But I still felt bad, as if it were my fault.

"Hey, uh, hey Nick? Um, I think I found them."

"Where!!" he shouted excitedly.

"Don't get your hopes up or anything."

"Well, where are they?"

"Um..." I bit my lip. "Inside of the car."
