Pervez Musharraf much like Saddam

Gen. Musharraf's test

Editorial, Sept. 26.

I fail to understand why Western powers and media project Gen. Pervez Musharraf as a messiah and Saddam Hussein as a devil, particularly when both are similar personalities.

Musharraf and Saddam both have military backgrounds; both came to power by coup; both treat the constitution as a Lego toy that can be distorted, scrapped and reshaped; both have hung on to uniform as well as presidential powers; both have crushed their political opponents; both have harboured terrorists.

But they have one difference: Saddam, being an egoist, foolishly challenged the authority of the United States while Musharraf, being an opportunist, double-crossed the Taliban and sided with America.

By giving huge coverage to a dictator at the expense of leaders from democratic countries, I am wondering what signals the Star is sending.
