A Bit About

Giveing your bird or birds adaquate liveing quarters is as important as food or vitamins. You can give your bird the best meal in town, but if his liveing quarters that are to small eventually he will suffer for it.Your birds need exercise to keep thier mussel tone or they start to become weak and listles with very little energy.Give your bird the biggest cage you can have for them. This will be there home for life especially if you have a parot type bird.Put some toys in so they will not get bored when you are not around.Make sure the toys you use are safe for birds(no loose pieces they can swollow or sharp edges)What ever type of bird you have make sure the bars are of the right spaceing so he can't get his head out through them and get caught. If your bird is wearing a leg band ckeck your cage to ensure there is nothing it can get its leg caught on.Use a store bought cage. They have been tested for the safety of houseing birds.Home made is alright but remember paint with lead and galvinized wire can kill a bird.Be fussy when purchaseing a cage.Your birds home means as much to him as yours dose to you. When setting up your birds home keep them out of long periods of sun light and drafts. These are two major points to watch for.

A person breedihg birds as a hobby in perhapes an out side bird room has a lot more to consider in the set up of there houseing arrangement.A building must be solid with no drafts and definitely mouse proof, also ventelation a must to circulate air, with heating as an option depending on where you live. The size of breeding cages, flights and how many will determine how many birds you will be able to house comfortably and safely as to not over crowding them.Common sense will tell us that a healthy, happy, bird will live longer a produce better.Take into consideration natural lighting with windows and there placemeant. If your birds are not going to go out in an avairy then uv lights should be considered as they would be a great benefit to the birds. An exaust fan vented to the out side would be a big help especially when the job of sweeping out comes up,and don't forget to wear your dust mask for your own protection as well.I will lightly mist the floor with water and vanodine to keep the dust and bacteria down when sweeping.Vanodine is an iodine base disinfectent and will work well on washable walls and cages. We will also spray with vircone as an anti bacterial and anti virus protection especially during the breeding season when there is a lot of stress in the bird room.

Our bird room is about 12+20 on a twelve inch cement floor. The walls are insulated because we live in a cold climate but the insulation also helps to keep it cool in the summer. The room is heated with a 2ooo watt electric wall furnace. There is also a bionaire air filter for the dust in winter, and a couple times a week we turn on an ozone and ione generator to freshen the air and this is also a help against molds, bacteria and viruses during the winter when every thing is closed up.There are for sets of floresent lights that the bulbs are being changed to vita lights for the uv effect. The walls are light gauge steel over gycp rock with a baked on white enamel finnish for easy and fast cleaning.Four windows on two sides of the building gives good light but dose not take in the sun all day.A large shade tree also helps to keep it cool on those extra hot days.We have added an aviary to this so the birds can get out in the spring till fall and enjoy the weather after their breeding season.

The aviary also needs to be mouse proof. The walls are a simple two by four construction with half inch weld wire fastened on with fence staples and then a wood strap over the staples to stop varmits from pulling the wire loose to get in. The roof is glass because it was part of a little green house so we left it on then added lattice on top to cut down the sun.About one foot up around the outside of the aviary we added a steel skirt to add appeal a help keep out bugs and mice. For the floor out here we used patio stone for ease of working with and wash up. It is realy not a good idea to use a dirt floor as the droppings can not be cleaned up and the floor soon gets messy, especially after a rain, and I am not sure what that will do for bacteria but eventually it will begin to give off an oder.Attached to the aviary we built a grape arbor to sit under in the shade to watch the birds play. This has nothihg to do with houseing the birds except it gives your yard a nice effect and we often feed the birds grapes when ready ,along with our resident cardinal.
