Teacher's Notes
This would work best in a Social Studies 10 classroom; however it is useful, of course, whenever you are discussing large scale migrations. Use this when discussing the Loyalist migration from America to the B.N.A. colonies, or the Irish migration to North America, etc.
The key to using this sheet is finding videos or books which have the "before, during and after" format in their depiction of immigration. Some recommended video titles include "The Newcomers" video series, especially the title dates 1740, 1832, 1847, and 1927. These are one hour mini-movies about different groups coming to Canada. Students seem to enjoy them.
Also recommended is "The World Turned Upside Down", a National Film Board (Canada) mini-movie about a Loyalist family making the journey from the United States to Upper Canada.
Make the journal project as creative as possible. Some students get very creative by burning the edges of their journals (!) or dipping them in tea water. The results can be amazing!
