After the defeat by Ras Tafari of the army of Ras Mikael, father of the uncrown Emperor Yasu (grandson of Menelik II), he married Woizero Menen, mother of the Crown Prince Asfa Wossen, Esther's grandfather.

After this victory in 1917 Ras Tatafi became a regent and Zewditu, daughter of Menelik II -- Empress until 1930, when Ras Tafari was crown as Emperor Haile Sellassie I after the death of Empress Zewditu.

Ras Tafari was supported by the Church and the Amhara Rases in his fight with Iyasu, because of the Islamization of the country Iyasu was undertaking. European powers (France and England) supported Ras Makonnen because Turky was their enemy in the WW I.

That is the roots of HIM title "Defender of Faith"...

This question of Muslim and Christian mixture and conflict of bloodlines and religions is more of the heritage nowadays. Im my view, not having real power serves the positive purpose of de-politization of the ancient conflicts.

Sellassie & Islam

Islamic lineage of the Shoa Amhara house:
Half of the Ethiopian population are Muslims and our readers often asked about Haile Sellassie and Islam. There several pages @ Sellassie Cyber University which address the Oromo or Eritrean issues. It's a well known fact that HIM was born in Harar, the Ethiopian capital of Islam and his mother was a Muslim (she died when Tarafi was two year old).

The Solomic dynasty line is well documented (read Kebra Negas), but the Islamic issues and the Prophet Muhammed (Muhammad) lineage was de-emphasised during the reign of Haile Sellassie. This page has a single purpose -- to bring light to Ras Tafari marriage to Menen, who brought with her the bloodline of the Prophet and came from the camp of enemies and rivals of her future husband.
