LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THANK YOU MILL HILL MISSIONARIES

I would like to register my gratitude to the Mill Hill Missionaries, and the missionaries who started this school. We are very grateful to you for the sense of service and sacrifice that you made in starting this school. After seeing that Ugandans needed education, these fathers decided to start Namilyango College. This school was started in 1902. The school was not like it is today, and that is why I also thank all those people who have worked so hard towards the prosperity of this school. Every one admires this school because of the efforts of the Mill Hill Missionaries and the people who have worked hard to make it what it is today. Lastly, I thank the headmaster, the deputies, and the teachers for the great job they have done to keep this school on a high standard. Long live Mill Hill Missionaries. Long live Namilyango College.

THE A.I.D.S DRACULAR

AIDS is a disease which has claimed a lot of lives in Uganda. Young and old, small and big, rich and poor, have all been affected by the virus known as the Human Immune Virus (H.I.V.) It is mostly spread through unprotected sex, here in Uganda. Doctors call it a disease while the Christians call it a curse from God. It causes suffering from different diseases and dying a very thin person. So, fellow country men, and more so, fellow students of Namilyango College, I kindly beg you to fight this dracular, because it has claimed the lives of many important people, including our parents, friends and relatives. It might also claim our lives before we finish our studies, especially if we mis-behave in the holidays by disobeying our parents and going to dance at night. I advise the students, because AIDS can leave you a miserable orphan, or leave your parents very devastated when you die. So take care.

THANK YOU HEADMASTER AND STAFF

I would like to use the school magazine to thank the Headmaster and the staff of Namilyango College for having created a very peaceful and conducive environment for those of us who are new in the school. They have done this by not allowing old boys to tease the new comers, but only showing them the right things which they should do. Secondly, they have also made accommodation easy by providing beds and spaces in the dormitories. The school has also encouraged the children to develop their talents in games like football, rugby, tennis and volleyball. I now want to finish S.4 when I can play most of these games.

KEEP YOUR HOUSES CLEAN

I would like to inform the members of House Kuipers and House Billington that their bathrooms and toilets are very unclean. They smell when one is passing near them, and their smell is just terrible. It seems the house members do not want to clean them. I would like to advise the members of these houses to clean the bathrooms and maintain cleanliness. After all, they are the ones who benefit from cleaning them. They should work together to clean the bathrooms, laundry, urinals and the sinks.

BE WISE AND CHANGE

Before I joined this school, I did not know that it was very good. People advised me not to put my choice here, but I insisted and applied Namilyango College as my first choice. So when I came here, I discovered that I would have made a very big mistake if I had not put this school as my first choice. I have found the school very good and interesting. It educates academically, physically, spiritually, socially and morally. Languages, apart form English, are also taught. I would like to end by advising the people out there that a wise man changes, but a fool does not. So I would like to advice you to change and join Namilyango College and achieve more.

GOOD ENTERTAINMENT, BUT BAD BOYS

We are very happy that the school provides us with an entertainment hall, where we are entertained with many things, like television, video, drama and music. But our biggest problem is that when we go for entertainment, we are not entertained. Instead, the students in the higher classes disturb us. They do this by shouting at us, and pushing us behind, saying that we are bapya. Yet most of us are short and we can not see properly. They should be the ones to go, because they are tall and bakade. We thought that the students from the upper classes should show us a good example, but they do not. I would therefore ask the Entertainment Captain to tell these students that they are not behaving well. If it means punishing them, please do so, because we are tired of their habits.

AVOID BAD HABITS

There are some things that we do in our societies, things which are not liked by everybody. Such things include abusing people, especially if they are older than you; backbiting, despising people, and many other bad things. These cause hatred among people, and spoil friendship. People can call you a bad person if you do such things which are stupid and useless. If people hate you, you will always do things on your own, and none will be willing to help you. You may then end up failing to do what you wanted yo do. So please, I kindly warn those students who do bad things to stop doing them, because they may even lead you out of the school and you miss your education.

HOW TO MANAGE LIFE IN A NEW SCHOOL

Going to a new school is a very hard thing. It is very difficult to adjust to a new environment. I am a new student in Namilyango College, and I have done my best to overcome my problems in the school. My parents gave me five rules to follow, and if you also follow them, you will manage to overcome you problems in the school. (a) One should learn all the rules and obey them in all possible ways; (b) One should obey what his captains, prefects, or teachers tell him ; (c) One should get involved in school activities like sports, debates and seminars, so as to keep busy and occupied; (d) One should make friends with students from higher classes who can help you with problems in the school; (e) One should always do the work give to you by teachers, captains or prefects. If one follows all these five rules, he will have a good life in any school.

GIRLS SHOULD BE MORE INITIATIVE

Allow me to express my sentiments about women’s equality and women emancipation, in you esteemed school magazine. Currently, women are struggling tirelessly to “become equal to men”. Teenage girls are being modelled by their mothers in such a way as to fight for equality with their brothers. I am a strong believer of women equality, and I feel it is healthy. But I strongly feel that the fight for women emancipation should go beyond equality with men. If women want to be equal to men, then they must be ready to start the struggle from the grass roots. It will not make much sense if the fight is directed to the boys, when the conservative men are left to intensify their negative attitudes towards women. Besides, the girls must also learn to take bold initiatives, because as long as the girls or women remain in the background, the men and boys will always dominate us and the fight for emancipation will be meaningless. The women should learn to be initiative so as to break the superiority that surrounds the male ego. I therefore believe that women emancipation will not be achieved by confrontation, but by attempting to reduce the male ego and superiority. This can be done by women becoming more assertive and initiative. So ladies over there, wake up and rise up to the challenge.
