Sanctuary

In the darkness, she's a dancer
Spinning on an empty stage
Seems it's only real when she's alone
All the rest is rage

See her eyes they're filled with shadows
Got a cup half full of pain
She says the world is kind of frightening
She's never going there again

So she seeks safety in her solitude
Takes her pleasures all alone
And in those deep blue nights in faded rooms
She finds ... Sanctuary

Now she decorates her Christmas tree
Says its good to be alone
Still she's mailed herself a dozen cards
A different name on every one

And she's wrapping empty boxes
From imaginary friends
So she tells herself its natural
Doesn't everyone pretend

And she seeks safety in her solitude
Finds her comfort on her own
And with her smokey blues and stale perfume
She finds ... Sanctuary

She says love is over rated
Though she wouldn't even know
Holds her isolation like a crown
And wears it everywhere she goes

Could be on a rainy highway
Fifteen hundred miles from home
Or drinking whiskey in the bathtub
Still got her dark glasses on

So she seeks safety in her solitude
Locks the door, unplugs the phone
And in the prison cell she's made her home
She finds ... Sanctuary

She says this is her philosophy
We all have to die alone
So it's easier to live that way
Saves us trouble all along

Break down the walls
