TRIVIA

Left Hand Drive:
All vehicles in the United States are Left Hand Drive; Is'nt it ? Well not quite correct !! Almost all are. We found the other day that the US Postal Service mail delivery vans are Right Hand Drive !!!! One of our friends guesses that this is to facilitate delivery of mail into post boxes kept on the right side of the road without alighting the van. Is it true ? Are there other vehicles like this ?

Will somebody throw some light on this ?

The Spare Tire
The other day we had a flat tire. Used to such scenarios in India, we courageously set out to change it ourselves. Sweating out in the sun, we first removed the punctured tire. Then we lifted the spare tire out of the boot. There we had the shock of our life!!!. The spare tire was smaller than the original one !!!. It was almost half a feet less in diameter. Ever imagined driving a car with three tires of one diameter and the fourth of a smaller diameter? To tell the truth, we took help from friend to get the punctured tire repaired and put it back on the vehicle. After several inquiries, we solved the mystery of the wrong sized spare tire. In US, all cars have spare tires which are smaller in diameter than the regular ones !!!. (Back in India spare tire is of the same size as the regulars). Now the question is why is it so? We assume it is to dissuade people from using the spare tire for long rides resulting in non-uniform wear among the four tires. Is this right? Do you have an answer?
Jared C. Lovell writes on this :
"Until about 10 years ago, most American cars came with a full sized spare tire. Today, many still do, and the "space saver" spare to which you refer is usually only found on compact cars. Two reasons for the small spares are that compact cars need the extra luggage space, and that they are cheaper to supply. Perhaps cars in India are not as new, on average, as cars in the US? It has nothing to do with even wear, I assure you. Installing one new tire, assuming it is the same size as the others, will not affect the wear of the existing tires."
