(CBS) Three years ago, at the age of 44, Dr. Marie Miczak decided to pursue her long-time dream, to learn how to ice skate.

"I enjoy the freedom of getting out and expressing myself. And, you know, the freedom of movement. I think it's the closest thing you're going to get to flight," she says.

The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler decided to join her.

"I hadn't been on the ice since I was a kid. I use to love ice-skating, but stopped when my family moved. Now I missed it," says Syler. "So, earlier this year I laced up at the ripe young age of 41 and was shocked at how much just came flowing back to me once I hit the ice. Today I skate at least once a week."

The Early Show is pairing with More magazine to profile women in their 40s and older who are reaching for the things in life they still long to do.

"I think 40 is still a huge milestone for women. Forty might be the new 20, or maybe 50 is the new 30," says Peggy Northrop, editor-in-chief of More. "As you become more competent in your life, especially if you have kids and your kids have gotten a little bit older, you think, 'What happened to the fun in my life. If not now, when am I going to try all of the things I've been dreaming about over the years?'"

In the December-January issue, More profiles several women who had a life-changing event that spurred them on to try something they always wanted to do.

Northrop offers some tips on how women can pay attention and put fun back in their lives:

Identify Your Passions: Sometimes you may have to think back to what you liked to do as a kid. Think back to those times. Maybe you like to perform or you love to cook. That will help you get in touch with your passion.

Choose Something Doable: Just because you love to perform, you don't want to say, 'I'm going to do Broadway auditions.' You probably don't have time to do that. There may be a tap class at the gym you may devote an hour a week to. Make something you can achieve and feel success with.

Find A Partner: It makes you less likely to quit, and its fun to have someone to explore a new passion with.

Talk Or Write About It: You just need to brag on yourself. Talk to other people, or keep a practice log or diary. It will help you remind yourself of what a great experience you're having and help you take on new challenges.

Ice Theatre of New York's 2004 Winter Festival is Coming To Chelsea Piers
Mood:  cool
Now Playing: ITNY's 20th Anniversary Gala in NYC!

Hello Everyone,

Last night, I attended the Ice Theatre of NY's 20th Anniversary Gala at the Lighthouse on Chelsea Piers in NYC. This year honored director and founder, Moira North. I interviewed Paddy Kennedy who is head of marketing and development. Ms. Kennedy has been with the company for only 6 months but is making fantastic progess in getting media attention for upcoming programs. She envisions an international school, a touring company, apprentice program and a dedicated floor dance mistress for ITNY's future.

I spoke with Robin Wagner, Natalia Dubova and saw fashion designer Vera Wang who was last year's honoree. Dick Button who is a member of the Company's advisory board and was in attendance also.

PHOTO: Moira North, Founder and Director of Ice Theatre of New York was honored for 20 years of service.

The Ice Theatre of New York was founded in 1984 with the vision of developing ice skating as a performing art resembling "ice ballet" or modern dance on ice. They offer outreach programs such as their Lunchtime Concert Series at the rink at Rockefeller Plaza which is free to the public.

The ensemble did special performances drawing from a repertoire of over 60 choreographed pieces for the evening at the Sky Rink at Pier 61. This was followed by cocktails, a silent auction and an acrobatic performance by a talented couple from Cirque Du Soleil at the Lighthouse.

Some of those inspiring repetory numbers will be included at their Winter Festival which begins December 27th and runs through the 30th. There is even a matinee package which includes a performance and public skating session. I've been invited back to cover and partake of the Ice Theatre's Winter Festival. Look for my full article on ITNY at Suite 101's Figure Skating Guide in January 2005.

2004 Ride for Rett
Now Playing: X-Training with a Purpose

Hi All,

If you've followed the announcements on Suite 101's Bulletin Board, you would know that this weekend was the 3rd annual Ride for Rett. First of all, many of you may ask what is Rett Syndrome? This is a disorder often mistaken for autism and primarily effecting girls and women. This is because male fetuses usually die before birth from this genetic ascribed disease. As a scientist, it is easy to get intrigued with the medical causes for a disease and yet not see the human face of a disorder.

Steve Medlin, the ride chairman and a member of the board of directors for the International Rett Syndrome Assoc., put photos of the young ladies afflicted with Rett on a poster for the event. They range from 4 to 23 years old and are from the area. This fosters a strong sense of community because these are in fact our neighbors, our friends. The event drew 150 participants and will raise 25-30K once all donations are received.

In the spirit of "in the trenches journalism", I decided to cover this event for the local New Jersey newspapers as rider. There were routes of varying length, 60, 35, 25, 13 and 7. I did the 7 mile route twice which gave me a total of 14 miles. We could not have asked for a more gorgeous day which started out cool and warmed up to more of a summer picnic setting by noon.

PHOTOS: Top - Mike and Heather Greenfield soak up some morning rays with friend Larry Cagen. Right-Pat Imbema of Middletown prepares for a 25 mile ride with "Team Abby" so named for Nuria Dunn's daughter.

So how was the tour? Well, I had been doing about 15 miles a day on my 26 pound Nishiki Sport touring bicycle. Riding the tour with my Terry Symmetry which is about 6 lbs lighter made the event pretty much a walk in the park. I would definitely consider a longer route next time as I came in about 1 minute ahead of the rest of my group. The second time we did the route, a huge doe ran out of the woods just missing me and my riding buddy, Brian Gildea, by seconds. All the same, we passed beautiful scenery and wildlife. Crossing a local reservoir, we saw an opossum, two white male egrets, ducks, geese and that crazy deer that almost sideswiped me.

The event wrapped up with music from a local band called Wired. The lead singer, a female vocalist also a composer, has great potential, did popular music and even a few oldies. Lots of good food, camaraderie and a sincere out pouring of affection by the community and families of these beautiful young ladies.

Really what I enjoyed most was seeing the interaction between the parents and children. I took one photo of Dawn Cagen interacting with her daughter Brianna who is 10 years old. Brianna was sitting on her lap and swaying to the music of the band. The tenderness that mother had for her child who was content to be there in her arms was endearing. More than that it made me think of my own 10 year old daughter, Magda and how much I love and care for her. Mothers of Rett Syndrome children are no different. Both are blessed to have each other.

I want to especially thank my husband, Joseph Miczak for training and coaching me as well for all the equipment assembly and maintainance. I'd also like to thank Terry Precision Cycling for my Terry Symmetry, cycling jerseys, gloves and pants, Veltec Group for my Easton clip-ons and CicloSport cyclometer / heart rate monitor. Riding with such superior cycling equipment made my first tour both successful and enjoyable.

This article along with these photos and more were sent to the Asbury Park Press newspaper. I also mentioned my Ride for Rett participation in my interview with More Magazine. That issue should hit the stands this December. Next assignment, the MS Tour in PA next spring!

On the Road again.....

Suite 101's Figure Skating Guide Goes on Location
Mood:  cool
Now Playing: USFS Adult Skating Camp Rocks on at the Ice House!
Hello Everybody,

This year's USFS Adult Skating Training Camp was perhaps the best ever. This fourth annual event was held at the area's most elite skating facility, the Ice House located in Hackensack, New Jersey. According to figure skating director, Craig Maurizi, campers came in from as far as Canada & California with representatives from at least 20 states. This facility is beautiful and home ice to many top competitive skaters such as Sasha Cohen and Sarah Hughes. They now can boast a newly opened 1,700 sq ft Athletic Performance Center with state of the art exercise equipment and fitness rooms for Pilate's, ballet and plyometrics.

PHOTO: Olympic pairs skater, Artur Dmitriev & assistant coach. Artur taught gorgeous stroking and edge quality classes while taking time to help each student.

Running the entire weekend from June 25th to June 27th, skaters were treated to camp tee-shirts, a sumptuous buffet luncheon, free ice practice sessions and a non-stop curriculum of on and off ice training classes. Top level coaches included Robin Wagner, newly weds Silvia Fontana & John Zimmerman, Artur Dmitriev and Peter Tchernychev. All of the sessions were well planned according to the level of the skaters while keeping the groups relatively small. Hand outs were also provided to reinforce what was covered in class.

The last day of camp cumulated with an on ice visit by Sasha Cohen to each of the classes. A surprise visit by US Pairs Team members Inoue and Baldwin was a special added treat.

PHOTO:The photo below is from the meet and greet where all of the coaches as well as Sasha Cohen answered questions from the attendees. An autograph and photo session closed the event.

DO make plans to attend next year as it is a value packed weekend for skaters of all levels. The announcement for next year's camp will be posted at the Figure Skating Guide's Bulletin Board located on the homepage. Click on the link to your left and read more about this event in the June issue of Suite 101's Figure Skating Guide as we continue our Summer Off Ice Training Series of articles!

Special thanks to Graf Canada for providing their beautiful Dance Boots and NEW model Graf Dance Blades for participation in the Dance Track with coaches Artur Dmitriev and Peter Tchernychev. I ice danced with both of these gentlemen in my Graf Dance boots and skated like a dream! This season, I will be testing Graf's revolutionary F4000's which is a hinged freestyle boot so watch for reviews of both this model and their Dance Boots and Blades. Also a very special thanks to Rosie Wear for the super hot Jazz Pants with Attached Skirt, (the ice was literally melting) and skater's charm jewelry. Visit both these company's websites to the left for more information. Be sure to also check out my articles in Rink Magazine which is also linked to your left.

New Book on Natural Health for Women
Mood:  cool
Now Playing: Asbury Park Press Covers Book Signing!

Hi All,

Following a book signing for The New Woman's Herbal & Nutritional Guideat Barnes & Noble on May 17th, the Asbury Park Press, (Gannett Newspapers), ran a full color article covering the event! The May 27th issue offered a two page column which ran in New Jersey's second largest circulation daily.

Staff writer, Joan Marshall, did an excellent job of including information from both the event and the book such as tips for juicing, optimal exercise and how to reduce fine lines and wrinkles with my new Microdermabrasion Crytals Soap. You can purchase the book directly from Lotus Press 800-824-6396, or order online at Barnes & Noble Booksellers Online

What's next on the horizon? Well, I'd like to do a natural beauty book which covers everything from skincare to makeup. Natural Beauty-Head to Toe is the working title thus far. In the same book, I'd also like to redo Atkins and South Beach diets into more healthy eating plans people can live with. The problem with Atkins is that many people find that their cholesterol levels end up going through the roof after being on this diet. For more information on my books, or to purchase my Microdermabrasion Crystals Soap for a younger, flawless complexion visit Miczak.com's online store Credit cards accepted!
