Kim was a recent graduate of Starfleet Academy. There, he was the editor of the Academy newsletter and published some of the first news about the Maquis. Voyager was his first deep space assignment.
Kim played the clarinet, but he left his at home on Earth. He later replicated another while on board Voyager.
