First of all your engine has been sitting for quite some time. The first thing to do is if it has been on its side or any other position than upright, it is probably hydraulically locked. If so you will have to do a number of things. First of all take your engine home (if its not already) and remove the spark plug. Then you should have a bucket or milk jug handy because you will have oil in the cylinder. Next you hold the bucket or jug up to the spark plug hole and turn it over ever so slowly so slow you cant stand it because if you don't it will squirt oil for 10 to 30 feet and you don't want to clean that up. After you turn it over one full turn you then turn it over a couple more times getting faster every time. Then after you do that you should spray some choke and carb cleaner in the spark plug hole to clean the cylinder wall and the head of the piston. Next leave the spark plug out and try to start it for a sec, then spray a little starting fluid in the cylinder. Last but not least replace the spark plug and tun it over and it should start right up.
If your engine is not hydraulically locked then you have just saved your self 10 min. First thing to do is to change the oil and replace the old gas with new gas (make sure to dispose of the bad oil and gas properly at the correct facilities if they exist or take it to a local mechanic). After changing the fluids lube up the joints and cables (if you machine has them) and make sure your air filter is clean. For detailed instructions on how to go about these procedures refer to your owners manual. There is one last thing to do before you use your machine regularly and thats to sharpen the blades or chain on a chain saw dull blades can cause poor prefprmance. Now your machine is ready for action.
PUTING YOUR ENGINE INTO STORAGE.
When puting an engine into storage it is a good idea to leave it on its frame unless its needed for other motors. First drain all the gas from the tank, fuel line, and the carburator bowl (again make sure to dispose of the bad oil and gas properly at the correct facilities if they exist or take it to a local mechanic). Be sure to LEAVE THE OIL IN. Do not remove the oil or your engine may never work again. Second clean the outside of the engine and make sure that if you use water to rinse off the cleaner that you dont get any in the carburator. Next remove the spark plug and put a capfull of oil in the cylender this will help prevent rust and corosion. Last before you set it on a shelf and walk away be sure its stable and wont tip over or fall its also a good idea to put a cover or put the motor in a plastic bag to keep it clean and contamanate free.
