TIPS & TRICKS

Grabbing Data from MS-DOS Apps

To move information between a Command Prompt or MS-DOS-based
application, activate the toolbar in the MS-DOS-based application
window. This will enable point & click access to copy, cut and
paste operations from a Windows-based application to an
MS-DOS-based application.

Changing File Associations

To change the default file association of a file type, simply select
the file, hold down shift, and click the right mouse button. Select
Open With, and choose the program you want to use for this file
type. Select "Always use this program to open this type of file" at
the bottom of the dialog box.

Lock Warning

Do you ever accidentally hit the Caps Lock or the Num Lick key by
mistake, only to realize a few words later that what you have
written is not what you wanted? Windows 95 has an option to let
you know when either of these keys has been hit. To activate it,
open the Control Panel, choose Accessibility Options, and select
Use Toggle Keys. Click OK. Now, every time you hit Caps Lock or
Num Lock, you will hear a warning tone.

A Better Clipboard

When using the Windows 95 clipboard, each time you paste something
to it, old contents are removed. However, Windows 95 has a
ClipBook that can be used to save and reuse clippings. To install
it, 1) Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in your CD drive, 2) Select
Add/Remove Software, 3) Go to the Windows Setup tab, 4) Click Have
Disk > Browse > d:\Other\Clipbook (d: is CD-ROM), 5) Double click
CLIPBOOK.INF, 6) Check ClipBook Viewer and then install. You will
now be able to open ClipBook through your Start menu under the
Accessories heading.

Backing Up the Registry

To back up your Windows Registry, create a folder and copy the
hidden files system.dat, system.da0, user.dat, and user.da0 to
this directory. If Windows 95 ever crashes and the message,
"Error in Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows." appears,
boot into DOS mode (Command Prompt Only) and replace the
corrupted files with the backup you made. Changes on your system
after you backed up the files will be lost, but you'll have the
rest of your Windows data back.

Drag and Print

Create a shortcut to your printer by clicking on your Start
menu, then Settings, then Control Panel, then Printers, and
dragging a printer icon to the Desktop. You can now drag
documents to the printer icon and print them instantly.

Internet Trace-Route Utility

Windows 95 contains a utility called "tracert" that shows the
different hops your IP request takes to reach its destination. It
also shows you where information is slowing down on the Net. To run
tracert, open the DOS prompt and type "tracert domainnamehere.com".
Each destination is 'pinged' 3 times and each ping returns a response
time. Generally, anything under 200ms is good. If '*' is returned,
there is a very busy server between you and your requested server.
