Edgar Allen Poe...
Why He Still Has A
Following Among Teens

If you ask a teen who thir most favorite poet is, you may just get the response of "Edgar Allen Poe". Of course, why not.... the extremliy moving, melodic yet dark poems could be used as current music lyrics & his short tales of the grotesque makes Goosebumps seem like badly written fariy tales.... a true master of his time, Poe is still reeling us into his works more than 140 years after his untimely death. He is buried in a cemetery in Baltimore Maryland (USA), his final mistaken destination. Every Jan. people make a pelgrimage to his grave to leave flowers.... some visit at other times just to take a glimpse of what is there in the southeastern corner of the garden. Most noted for his "The Raven" (first printed 1845), many do not understand that most, if not all of his poems were written &/or dedicated to someone in his life. Such is the case of the poem we will be featuring; "Eulalie - A Song" (first printed 1845) was dedicated to his wife Virginia who would die 2 years after it was published at the age of 24. They were married for 11 years... you add it up. Anyway, without further ado.......
EULALIE - A SONG

I dwelt alone In a world of moan, And my soul was a stagnant tide, Till the fair & gentle Eulalie became my blishing bride - Till the yellow-haired young Eulalie became my smiling bride.

Ah, less - less bright The stares of the night Than the eyes of the radiant girl! And never a flake That the vapor can make With the moon-tints of purple & pearl, Can vie with the modest Eulalie's most unregarded curl - Can compare with the bright- eyed Eulalie's most humble & careless curl.

Now doubt - now pain Come never again, For her soul gives me sigh for sigh, And all day long Shines, bright & strong, While ever to her dear Eulalie upturns her matron eyes - While ever to her young Eulalie upturns her violet eye. THE END
