Jordan Schoolbook Revision Takes Anti-Terrorism Tone Wednesday, December 31, 2003
As part of a revised curriculum designed with the help of UNESCO, Jordanian students will receive new textbooks for the 2004-05 school year that distinguish between "terrorism and legitimate resistance," Jordanian Education Minister Khaled Tuqan said yesterday. The project, started more than two years ago, is one element of a "comprehensive human rights program" aimed to "spread reconciliation focusing on values, Islamic teaching as well as Arab and Islamic heritage and international law ... in order to increase awareness among students," Tuqan said. Jordan's King Abdullah II has been openly pushing for democracy and human rights promotion in his country since the 2001 terror attacks in the United States, which brought pressure on Arab leaders to condemn the appropriation of Islam for terrorist purposes. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait also announced plans earlier this month to reform their educational systems in order to combat violence, intolerance and extremism (Agence France-Presse, Dec. 30).
I got this off of the U.N. Wire. What is remarkable is how in the second paragraph, it says that schoolbooks will be focused on Islamic teaching and heritage, but, in the third, the same person, Abdullah, is portrayed as someone pushing for democracy and human rights, and condemning the terror attacks of 2001. The man is clearly at odds with himself. Islam teaches the superiority of men over women (that takes care of human rights), submission without question (is that democracy?), and the importance of using terror against infidels (why would he condemn what Islam encourages?).

The whole world could probably do with some education reform. Maybe American textbooks will clear up the misconception that Osama bin Laden is not a terrorist, when he's actually a "freedom fighter". Yup. And wherever you are facing is North.
