Fortune Cookies
A Story By Lonna
"Otousan..." Trunks whispered
hoarsely as tears streamed down his face. He stared into the mahogany coffin
that contained his father. He had a beautiful outfit on designed in the
traditional way of a Saiyan. It looked like the outfit his father, King Vegeta,
wore, except for royal blue. Trunks sighed. It had happened all so fast.
*************************************************************Saturday,
2:00 A.M.
Vegeta awoke to a crash. He walked into his living room with Bulma close behind.
He looked around the room and saw a figure in the shadows. As he came to into
the light Vegeta made out a knife in his hand. He held it straight out in his
heads and ran towards Bulma ready to thrust it into her chest. Vegeta stepped in
front of her not thinking the knife was even going to pierce his skin...until
the knife did. The man had a high power level for being a human, but Vegeta
didn't bother to sense his Ki. He would've lived but the knife penetrated
Vegeta's heart. He managed to blast the man into another dimension before he
fell to the floor.
"Vegeta!" Bulma squeaked as she lifted his head in her arms his blood
forming a pool around them both.
"Bulma...take care of Bra and Trunks for me..."
"Don't talk like that! You're going to be all right!"
Vegeta smiled a little, "I wish I was. Tell them I love them and I will see
them again...Aishiteru Bulma."
And he died in her arms leaving her in tears, pain, and shock. *************************************************************Trunks
began to weep silently as his mother wrapped him in her arms. Pan watched from
the opposite side of the coffin in the courtyard. Vegeta promised her he would
be back and he made her promise not to cry. She was the only one told about
Vegeta's dreams of dying. Ever since Goku disappeared she had adopted Vegeta as
some sort of Grandpa and he trained her and loved her like one of his own. She
understood Vegeta in a friend way. A way nobody had ever reached Vegeta. Now
both of her Ojiisan's were gone. Pan's face was now flushed from holding back
tears.
Stop crying, Trunks! Please! I won't cry unless you stop! Pan said mentally. She
bowed her head.
"Veggie-San..." she whispered softly as tears rolled down her cheeks
freely.
The pallbearers lowered Vegeta into the ground and began to bury him. Bra
watched in complete horror while Pan just stared. Trunks didn't even look. When
the painful scene was over, Pan's Ki exploded like a rocket and she blasted from
the place she was standing into the sky.
"Pan!" yelled Gohan, but it was to no avail. He prepared to take off
after her but he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to stare at Videl's tear
streaked face.
"Let her go," she said slowly and grimly.
Everyone stared at the place Pan had stood as if they hadn't expected her to
react that way. There was another major blast of energy and Trunks took off in
the same manner as Pan. *************************************************************Somewhere
in the woods...
"Baka!" Pan cursed loudly as she navigated through the trees at top
speed. "He knew he was gonna die! He could've stopped it! Stupid! Yamero!"
Pan landed on a moss-covered tree and began to cry silently. It hurt to cry that
way. Her body shook with silent sobs and each one brought incredible pain not
only mentally but also physically. She sensed an approaching Ki and expected it
to be her father so she quickly wiped her tears away and sat up straight. It was
not Gohan but Trunks. This startled Pan.
"Trunks!" She noticed he looked very pale and his eyes were red.
"God Trunks...I don't know what to say..." She stopped and reached out
and hugged him. Tears that were held back were suddenly dumped on Pan's
shoulder.
Pan couldn't take it when her friends or family cried. She rarely cried so she
was affected majorly by other's tears and sorrow. She bit her lip and struggled
not to cry.
This is Trunks time to cry! I'll cry later!"
Finally Trunks lifted his head and wiped his eyes. Pan suddenly remembered a
statement Veggie-San had made, "You may tell one person about my
dreams and our relationship, some may have a clue but none know how close we
really. Tell someone you know you won't regret telling and someone you can trust
and above all, someone you love."
"Trunks-kun?"
He sniffed, "Yes Pan-chan?"
That name immediately warmed her entire heart and whatever doubt that was there
about telling him before was now gone.
"I have to tell you something. Would you like to go eat at that new Chinese
Place? My treat."
Trunks grinned, "Sure." *************************************************************Trunks
listened intensely to Pan's story while eating. He stared at her and thought
about how pretty she was. Whoa, Trunks! Where did that thought come from!
"So thats why I told you. Because I decided that you are one of my best
friends."
Why couldn't we be more? Trunks thought.
"Yeah, I agree. You're the only girl I can go to the mall with!"
Trunks joked, and pour my heart out to!
"Well, we're through eating! Now we can do the best part!"
Please be a good-bye kiss!
"Eat the fortune cookies!"
Trunks grinned. It was almost as good as a kiss!
He carefully cracked his open and took out the little message; "You Will
Find Your Love Through Depression." Trunks shivered at the eeriness of it.
Pan did the same to hers.
"Age Matters Not In Love." She said. She blushed slightly and tried to
act as though nothing had happened. Wow! How strange! Darn you Veggie-San!
You're the only one I told about Trunks! You would do something like this! She
looked up and smirked. Watch what happens when you mess with fate Veggie-San!
"Well, we should go home now."
"Yeah...WAIT! I don't have a vehicle!"
Pan sighed and rolled her eyes, "You forget often that you can fly, ne?"
Trunks smiled sheepishly, "Oh...Yeah!" Then he started to think about
Pan again.
Pan snapped her fingers in front of his face, "Hello? Are you there?"
Trunks's eyes lost the dreamy look and stared at Pan blushing, "Gomen
Pan."
Pan looked at him funnily, "Thats all right. You've had a rough day."
Before he could make another comment to stall them from leaving Pan flew out the
door. *************************************************************Pan
was flying and thinking about life at the same time.
Goku, gone, Veggie-San, gone, falling in love with someone fourteen-years older
than me!
"Ya know Pan, you haven't shown a lot of emotion about my father."
Pan blinked, "I never show a lot of emotion about anything."
Trunks smiled knowingly, "But you two were close, ne?"
"How'd ya know?!" Pan asked completely astonished, "I told you he
told me because there was no one else he could trust!"
"Well, if you trust someone with that information you have to be close to
them," Trunks' hands flew over his mouth, " Gomen nasai, Pan! I
shouldn't have said that!"
"Thats all right!" Pan was unsuccessfully trying to control a giggle
at Trunks' odd behavior, "I'm glad you did."
They flew a little while longer till they reached Pan's house.
"My window's always open if you need to talk Trunks-kun."
Trunks smiled, "I'll keep that in thought Pan-chan." *************************************************************Tap,
tap, tap.
"Huh?" Pan sat up wearily in her bed. She looked out her window where
Trunks was hovering. She grinned as she opened up the window, "Trunks! You
are such a baka! You know that, don't you?"
"Yeah. I know. I came to talk cause I couldn't sleep. Did I wake you
up?"
Pan looked down, "No." she whispered.
This startled Trunks, Panny...what's wrong?"
She lifted her face to look at him, "You...look...so...much...like
Veggie-San," she said in breaths that would prevent her from crying. Even
though she tried, a single tear escaped her eye and splashed her hand.
"Pan-chan, you need to cry..."
Pan stubbornly shook her head no.
Trunks looked her straight in the eyes, "You let me cry on your shoulder,
now you can cry on mine."
Pan stared at him as more tears came from her eyes, "I HAVE NO RIGHT TO
CRY! I'M NOT EVEN RELATED TO HIM!" Pan said in a whispered scream.
Trunks gently pulled Pan into his arms and stroked her hair, "But you loved
him."
Pan felt it coming and she knew there was nothing in her power to stop it. Her
face was on Trunks' shoulder and she was crying so hard that she could hardly
breathe. "Stop crying! Stop it!" Pan cursed herself to stop and
finally through sheer determination and no oxygen Pan stopped.
Trunks felt this, "Pan if you stop, it won't help anyone."
Pan nodded and continued to cry except for it was less noisy.
It was 4:00 A.M. and Pan wearily lifted her
head from Trunks shoulder.
"I'm through now," she said weakly.
Trunks nodded and laid her on her bed then walked to the window.
"Trunks-chan?"
Trunks immediately stopped at the name she had used, "Yes?" he said
without turning around.
"Arigatou." (Jap illiterate peeps, this means thanks.)
And he left.
*************************************************************Two
weeks later...
"Ahhhh!" Pan sighed with relief. She had just caught up with all the
schoolwork she had missed during the week she was grieving over Vegeta. She
leaned back in her recliner and dozed off.
"SKRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKK!!!" Pan jumped up from her
seat as she heard the familiar sound of chair wheels sliding backwards. Trunks
was holdin Pan's chair while Pan was struggling to hold herself. He was
laughing.
"THAT WAS NOT FUNNY TRUNKS-SAN!!"
He immediately stopped, "Don't call me that! You make me feel like an old
fart!"
"Well you're only thirty..." Pan sarcastically mumbled under her
breath.
"Eh...what was that?"
"Oh nothing," Pan said angelically, "What-cha want?"
"You wanna go eat at that Chinese place again?"
Pan looked up at him with bright eyes, "Yes! I just finished my
homework!" Trunks smiled, "You'll be graduating soon!" He looked
at his watch, "Yikes, it's almost closing time! Lets go!"
They flew off in search of Trunks' car. *************************************************************"MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!"
Pan smiled at Trunks as she ate the last noodle off her plate.
Trunks began to laugh, "Pan! We get to eat the fortune cookies now!"
Pan nodded, a little nervous about what the cookies would say, "Lets show
each other our fortunes after we leave, kay?"
"All right!"
They both opened their cookies and blushed slightly when they read them
silently.
"Ahem." Pan coughed.
"Let's go!"
They went to get in Trunks car. *************************************************************Instead
of driving them home, Trunks drove to the park.
"Okay," He breathed while levitating into the air as Pan followed,
"Switch!"
Trunks and Pan quickly exchanged their tiny papers and read them outloud.
Trunks read Pan's first, "Your Best Friend Is Your True Love."
Pan read Trunks' next, "The Love Of Your Life Is In Front Of You."
They stared at each other in complete disbelief and then suddenly they were
locked in each other's arms kissing.
"Aishiteru Pan-chan! I've loved you for a long time!"
"Aishiteru, too, Trunks-chan! And I bet I've loved you longer!" She
said kissing him deeply.
When they parted Pan looked confused, "Ya know...neither of those sounded
very fortune like..."
"You're right." Trunks said while holding Pan.
She looked on the back of her fortune and giggled, "I told you Veggie-san!
Don't mess with fate!"
Trunks kissed her again and the paper fell from Pan's hand and on the back was a
short message:
I will be back soon. I hope you're happy with your new mate. Love you forever,
Veggie-san
