Sammy also came to the big party that I had for my buddies I met at camp. He liked Lisa Orange, and they dated for awhile.
I went to Sammy's house several times. His older brother was in the army and played drill sergeant with us once. He would drive us through the woods in his jeep and crash through the brush and trees. Once, Sammy and I were swinging on a vine across the creek and it broke. We both fell in and got drenched.
Sammy and I kept in touch for years. I was crushed when I got the news from Lisa that Sammy had drowned. It was soon after I had moved to Eastern Ky. Sammy was swimming at the lake and drowned about 20 feet from the shore. It was the day before he was to start college. Sammy's death affected me deeply, and I was depressed for a long time after that.
