Baghaihat Women

On 19-20 February 2010 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous people at Baghaichari. At least 76 indigenous houses were burnt down including Buddhist temples. Bangladesh police arrest PCJSS leader Shaktipada Tripura in Dhaka

On 22 January 2009 at mid-night Mr. Shaktipada Tripura (42), Organising Secretary of the Parbatya Chaṭṭagram Jana Smahati Samiti (PCJSS) and Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum, was arrested from a rented house at Mirpur in Dhaka.

It is learnt that at around 11.30 pm a group of police from Mirpur police station raided the house at Mirpur in Dhaka where wife of Shaktipara Tripura with her children has been residing since 2007. Police searched house and deranged the cloths and valuables. Then Mr. Tripura, also a traditional leader (Headman) and former UP Chairman, was arrested from the house. However, police did not show any charge or warrant against Mr. Tripura during the arrest. Habilder Shahjahan asked Basanti Tripura, w/o Shaktipada Tripura not to look for his husband at night, however, advised her to contact at Mirpur police station next day early in the morning.

According, Ms. Basanti Tripura with his daughter and son went to Mirpur police station to see her husband at 8.00 am on 23 January. However, she was given misinformation by Mr. Mahiuddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur police station that Mr. Tripura was not taken there. Again, Advocate Hemanta Tripura went to Mirpur police station and the OC also misbehaved with him. Finally, after showing his lawyer identity card, he managed to meet Mr. Shaktipada at police station.

After that at around 2.00 pm Mr. Tripura was taken into Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court and produced before Ferdaus Ara's Court. The lawyer for Mr. Tripura, advocate Prakash Bikash Bishwas submitted bail petition. But Ms. Ara rejected the bail petition and sent Mr. Tripura to Dhaka jail.

It is mentionable that during the state of emergency on 14 June 2007 Joint Forces led by army raided his house at Khagrapur in Khagrachari district. Mr. Tripura was absent at the home at that time. However, military forces picked up Mr. Bholash Tripura, Finance Secretary of Khagrachari district branch of Hill Student Council, from his house and two false cases for keeping illegal arms and foreign currency were filed against Shaktipada Tripura and Bholash Tripura with Khagrachari police station. Military forces also seized Mr. Tripura's passport. Since, Mr. Tripura has been passing absconding life. It is also learnt that Mr. Tripura was arrested when he had been preparing to return to Khagrachhari to fight the cases.
