Victim of Bangladesh Army Torture

On 4 August 2008 a group of Bangladesh army personnel led by Capt. Tanvir demanded few chickens from Buddhist villagers Mr. Tonchongya of Belaichari. When Mr. Tonchongya refused the Muslim soldiers of Bangladesh army blind folded him and tortured him resulting in the fracture of his right leg. Thereafter Tanvir forced the local village chief Anil Chandra Tonchongya and Doctor Priya Dorshi to sign a statement stating that Mr. Tonnyapu Tonchongya got his leg fractured while running away from the army.

Bangladesh army arrest indigenous activist in Khagrachari under the 'State of Emergency' rule

On 3 June 2007 Mr. Santoshita Chakma alias Bakul, General Secretary of CHT Returnee Jumma Refugee Welfare Association was arrested by the joint forces (Bangladesh army and police) from Khagrachari district town. He was returning from Circuit House after attending the meeting of the Task Force on rehabilitation of returnee Jumma refugees and internally displaced persons. Mr. Santoshita Chakma Bakul (48) is a member of the Task Force representing the returnee Jumma refugees. On that day, the Task Force meeting was held at Khagrachari Circuit House, chaired by Mr. Samiron Dewan, Chairman of the Task Force. The other members of the Task force Mohamed Mokhlesur Rahman, member secretary & divisional commissioner of Chittagong division, PCJSS representative Mr. Sudhasindhu Khisa, representative of three Hill District Councils, representative of CHT Affairs Ministry, representative of General Commanding Officer of 24 th infantry division of Chittagong cantonment and other members attended as well.

The joint forces cordoned the area of the circuit house while the Task Force meeting was going on. The joint forces arrested Mr. Santoshita Chakma Bakul while he was leaving the meeting place along with representative of Rangamati Hill District Council Mr. Sujit Dewan for Rangamati at around 2.00 p.m. He was taken to Khagrachari police station. Till now it is not known for what charge he was arrested. However, the military forces targeted him as he has been protesting land grabbing by the Muslim settlers with the support of Bangladesh army in Khagrachari district and human rights violation including religious persecution. The joint forces encircled the house of Santoshita Chakma Bakul at Mahajan Para in Khagrachari municipality on 5 May 2007. However, he was absent at home at that time.
