Bengali settlers attack indigenous people at Ranirhat

On 29 October 2002, the armed cadres of the UPDF kidnapped Manager of Thandachari Tea Estate Mr. Kazi Nurul Anwar Jahangir (30) from Ranirhat area under Rangunia of Chittagong district. In connection with the incident, the Bengali Muslims of Ranirhat area (the area on the Rangarnati-Chittagong road) tried to attack the indigenous people who were passengers of buses and came Ranirhat bazar for selling and shopping. They also threatened to kill one hundred thousand indigenous people if Kazi Nurul Anwar Jahangir (kidnapped person) was not released.

A 7‑member Rescue Committee led by chairman of Kalampati Union Parishad Mr. Kyajai Marma was formed. Other members of the committee were chairman of Betbunia union Mr. Aung She Chowdhury, ex‑chairman of Betbunia union Mr. Badiul Alam, local leader of Betbunia Mr. Aung Sha Thowai Marma, general secretary of Kaukhali Awami League Mr. Ershad and headman Mr. Tushar Kanti Dewan. The indigenous members of the Rescue Committee tried hard to rescue the kidnapped person and at the last on 5 November 2002 the UPDF released Kazi Nurul Anwar Jahangir on heavy ransom.

After the release of Kazi Nurul Anwar Jahangir, the owner of the tea estate ex‑chairman of Rangunia sub‑district and local BNP leader Mr. Kazi Naurul Islam lodged case with Kaukhali police station against the indigenous members of the Rescue Committee like Kyajai Marma, Aung She Chowdhury, Aung Sha Thowai Marma and Tushar Kanti Dewan in connection with kidnapping. The Bengali Muslims of Rahirhat area led by Kazi Naurul threatened the indigenous people to return the ransom money otherwise they would face serious consequence. Even they formed a communal committee named Upajatiya Santras Pratirod Committee (Tribal Terrorist Resistant Committee) at Ranirhat bazar and organized meeting through this committee. They blocked road at Ranirhat bazar, opposed indigenous people to sell vegetables.
