Bangladesh army tortures indigenous people at JarnatillaOn 2 December 2001, a gang of miscreants robbed a passenger jeep at Jarnatilla of Tabulchari‑Panchari road in Khagrachari district. In connection with this incident, the Bangladesh army arrested an indigenous passenger of the said jeep named Mr. Braja Kishore Tripura s/o Shashiram Tripura of village Gourangapara under Matiranga. On the other, Mr. Prartana Kumar Tripura s/o Joyanmoni Tripura was also arrested while returning home from Panchari bazar. It was notable that during the robbery, Prartana Kumar was at Panchari bazar along with his 10 years old daughter. The army handed them over to Panchari police station after heavily beating and harassing. The army from Jarnatilla camp conducted an operation at Maratilla village in connection with the robbery. Mr. Aungaj Marma s/o Kyalau Marma and Mr. Deba Ranjan Tripura s/o Saday Ranjan Tripura were brutally beaten by the army personnel. The army threatened that all the villagers would be beaten if they could not hand over the culprits of the incident. On the other, 3 karbaris (village heads) were harassed while they went to police station for inquiring the incident and to see the arrested persons. The villagers of the area submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachari demanding release of the innocent indigenous people and to maintaining law and order.
