Lalthaleng Bawm

On 15 May 2025, an indigenous man Lalthaleng Bawm (30), son of Mr. Lalmin Lian Bawm and Mrs. Pena Clear Bawm died in Chittagong Central Jail due to lack of medical treatment.

Lalthaleng Bawm was detained without trial for a year after his arrest and was not given proper treatment even after his physical condition deteriorated. He died on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.


An indigneous Bawm man dies in police custody in Chittagong

On 15 May 2025, a Bawm man named Lalthaleng Bawm (30), son of Mr. Lalmin Lian Bawm and Mrs. Pena Clear Bawm detained in Chittagong Central Jail, died due to lack of medical treatment. Lalthaleng Bawm’s hails from Bethel Bawm Para, Ruma, Bandarban district.

Lalthaleng Bawm was detained without trial for a year after his arrest and was not given proper treatment even after his physical condition deteriorated. He died on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

On April 2, 2024, Bangladesh army backed Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) robbed a bank. As a result of the bank robbery, the Bangladeshi armed forces arrested a total of 49 indigenous Bawm people from Bethel Para in Ruma on April 8, 2024. Mr. Lalthaleng Bawm was one of the detainees. These people were sent to prison charged with various false cases.

Although some of those detained in this operation were released within a few months, 23 women and 4 children are known to have been in prison for more than a year. Many have multiple cases against them and their bail applications have been rejected multiple times.

But at the same time, top leaders of banned Islamic militant organizations have been released on bail, innocent Bawm women, men and children are detained.
