Benglai settlers open fire on indigenous Buddhist villages in Longudu

On July 18, 1986, at 01:00 hours (BST) the VDP personnel of the surrounding settlements of the settlers near the army camp at Sonai, P.S. Longudu, in a bid to make a ground for attacking the Chakma villages, opened fire towards the Chakma villages on the pretext of being attacked by the Shanti Bahini. The Chakma inhabitants had to take shelter in the jungles to save their lives.

The indigenous leaders lodged a complaint to the army authorities that the firing incident was a motivated design of the settlers to create communal riots and to uproot the indigenous people from their ancestral lands.

After an inquiry, it was found that the firing incident was pre planned by the VDP as there was no presence of the Shanti Bahini in the Chakma villages when the incident occurred. The army authorities took no action against the VDP personnel for their wantonly act.
