On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.
Dr. Shusovon Dewan is an indigenous physician in Rangamati. Muslim settlers mercilessly beat him when they found him in the street.
Bangladesh army torture an indigenous man in Merung
On 24 June 1986, Bangladesh army arrested and tortured 3 indigenous Chakma men when they came to take their pigs from their village at Gulchari in Merung. Earlier, they were forced to abandon their village due to atrocities and oppression by the Bangladesh army and the Muslim settlers. The victims are:
Tokkhula Chakma son of Ananda Chakma of No. 3 Rubber Plantation, Lamba Chara
Manoranjan Chakma of No. 1 Rubber Plantation, Ghulchari, Merung.
Nalini Chakma, son of Dubramoni of Ghulchari, Merung.
They were beaten and tortured and being kept under army custody without any trial or bail.
