Bangladesh army sponsored Muslim settlers

On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

The Muslim settlers are attacking South Kalindipur area on 22nd September.


Bangladesh army and settlers attack indigenous people in Baghaichari

A communal riot took place on May 8, 1986, in Lalyaghona, Ugalchari, Tulaban, Jibanga Chara areas of Baghaichari Upazila when army, BDR, VDP and the Bengali Muslim settlers launched coordinated attack on the innocent unarmed ethnic Chakma people in which many Chakmas were seriously wounded, brutally tortured, their houses set on fire, properties looted, Buddhist temples desecrated, and images of Lord Buddha were broken into pieces.

As part of Bangladesh government's policy of systematic eviction and extermination of the ethnic Jumma (High Landers) people, in a secret meeting a decision was taken to attack the Chakma villages. The meeting was attended by Leut. Col. Mohamad Jalal Abed, C.O. 41st EBR, Maj. Khairul Alam of 14th BN (Battalion), BDR, Marishya, Humayun Kabir, Adjutant of VDP, Hassan Ali, VDP commander, Amirul Karim, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Haider Ali, a resident near Baghaichari Upazila office. The culprits who took active part in the violence are:

  1. Shamsul Huda, Chairman of Rupakari U.P. (Union Parishad), address- Battali, P.S. Baghaichari.
  2. Azizur Rahman of Jibanga Chara, P.S. Baghaichari, a contractor.
  3. Hafiz Mohamed Majhee of Kassalong Bazaar, P.S. Baghaichari.
  4. Asghar Ali of Ugalchari, P.S. Baghaichari.
  5. Sukkur, address as above.
  6. Balya, address as above.
  7. Syed Noor, address as above.
  8. Muttalib, address as above.

The attacking Muslims, army, BDR and the VDP personnel shouted agitating Islamic slogans-

'Yah Ali', 'Nara-e-Taghdir, Allah-o-Akbar', 'No room for Kafirs, Hill Tracts for Muslims', 'By the grace of Allah (God), Save Sonar (Golden) Bangla'.

Names of the victims whose properties and belongings were looted and those who were victimised and tortured on May 8 1986, are given below:

  1. Nihar Kanti Chakma, 21 yrs, son of Birendra Lal Chakma, of Lalyaghona, P.S. Baghaichari.
  2. Sukh Bilash Chakma, 46 yrs, son of Padma Kumar Chakma, address as above.
  3. Sukhomoy Chakma, 28 yrs, son of Tejendra Lal Karbari, address as above.
  4. Hamesh Kumar Chakma, 39 yrs, son of Golok Chandra Chakma, address as above.
  5. Sanghamuni Chakma, 16 yrs, son of Hamesh Kumar Chakma, address as above.
  6. Tejendra Lal Karbari, 62 yrs, son of Kalachan Chakma, address as above.
  7. Prafulla Kumar Chakma, 31 yrs, son of Tejendra Lal Karbari, address as above.
  8. Vira Kumar Chakma, 37 yrs, son of Rangachan Chakma, address as above.
  9. Nagendra Lal Chakma, 47 yrs, father's name and address as above.
  10. Birendra Lal Chakma, 63 yrs, son of Subal Chandra Chakma, address as above.
  11. 'Navjyoti Buddhist Vihara' of Lalyaghona, P.S. Baghaichari, was desecrated by the Bengali Muslims, army, BDR and the VDP personnel. All the 4 images of Lord Buddha including the one brought from Thailand were kicked and broken into pieces. The director of the Vihara, Rev. Pragga Sara Bhikshu was beaten so severely that he fainted instantly and fell on the ground. He was not even allowed to drink water, not to think of taking his morning meal. The Vihara was ransacked, and all its valuable properties were looted by the Bengali Muslims and the Bangladesh forces.
  12. Bipin Kumar Chakma, son of Naramya Chakma, of Lalyaghona, P.S. Baghaichari. His house was ransacked, and properties looted away.
  13. Vijay Kumar Chakma, son of Golok Chandra Chakma, address as above. His house was ransacked and looted as above.
  14. Punyalal Chakma, son of Barpeda Chakma, address as above. Two goats were looted from him.
  15. Vijay Kumar Chakma, son of Rogodhan Chakma, who is the Chairman of Baghaichari Council, was also threatened with dire consequences when he tried to pacify the Muslim settlers and the government forces who attacked the innocent unarmed Chakmas, looted their properties and committed rape, torture on them.
  16. Dinesh Chandra Chakma, son of Pushpamoni Chakma, of Lalyaghona, P.S. Baghaichari, was beaten with iron rod by the attacking Muslims supported by the government forces when he and Vijay Kumar Chakma tried to pacify the attackers in order to save the tribal people and to bring peace and normalcy in the affected tribal areas.
  17. Mrigendu Chakma, son of Punyasen Karbari, address as above, was threatened with life.
  18. Ananda Charan Chakma, son of Kishto Charan Chakma, address as above. He was returning from Marishya Bazaar (Market) and on the way he was severely beaten by the Muslims.
  19. Laxmi Kumar Chakma, son of Vishnu Chakma, address as above, This innocent person was also victimised like Ananda Charan Chakma.
  20. Fanobi Chakma, 24 yrs, wife of Upendra Chakma, of Jibanga Chara, P.S. Baghaichari, was working in the garden near her house when Bengali Muslims came running and fell upon her. She was gang raped by the Bengali Muslims.
  21. Tondo Chakma, son of Surya Kumar Chakma, address as above, who is a student of tenth class, was returning home from his tutor, on the way he was rounded up by the Muslims in the Upazila ground and was severely beaten by them.
  22. Bhrama Lal Chakma, son of Kripachan Chakma, address as above, was inhumanly beaten in his house by the Bengali Muslims.
  23. Tando Chakma, son of Umesh Chandra Chakma, address as above. He was coming home, on the way he was caught and beaten by the Muslim settlers.
  24. Dayal Kumar Chakma, son of Brisha Mohan Chakma, of Jibanga Chara, P.S. Baghaichari, who is an officer of Upland Settlement in the Rubber Plantation Project, was kept in confinement for more than an hour in the office of the UNO by the VDP personnel.
  25. Nitish Dewan, son of Prabodh Dewan, address as above, who is an employee of Rural Development department, was also manhandled and treated like Dayal Kumar Chakma.
  26. Madhav Chandra Chakma, of Uluchari, P.S. Baghaichari was severely beaten along with three others by the BDR personnel.
