Born in Wales on 30 January 1974, and raised in England, Christian Bale began acting in school plays. His professional career began at age 10 with the role of an American kid in the West End stage production of "The Nerd." This led to participation in workshops in London and roles in "Heart of the Country" (a BBC miniseries), The Land of Faraway (a Swedish/Russian fairy tale), and the made-for-television epic Anastasia starring Amy Irving and Olivia De Havilland.    

  In 1987, Bale made his feature film debut in Steven Spielberg's Empire Of The Sun in the lead role of Jim, the English schoolboy. He followed this with roles in other heady projects such as Kenneth Branagh's production of Shakespeare's Henry V and the TNT adaptation of the classic Treasure Island as Jim Hawkins opposite Charlton Heston's Long John Silver.    

  Bale's other films include Swing Kids, Little Women (as Laurie), The Secret Agent, and Pocahontas. He is currently appearing in the Todd Haynes glam rock extravaganza Velvet Goldmine with Ewan McGregor. Bale's next film will be another Shakespearian play, the comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream with Michelle Pfeiffer, Kevin Kline, and Calista Flockhart.
