My Thoughts
There's always something about an action movie that brings out the best in a soundtrack. Last year was Daredevil with the hardest, most fun soundtrack of the year. This year, its the Punisher, what promises to be the most gritty movie of the year. Wind-Up once again takes the task of producing a hard-hitting soundtrack. And, they succeed.
With artists like Finger Eleven, Seether, and the two parts of Evanescence on the bill, Wind-Up has the best cadre of new talent out there. They're all used to their best talents here, along with other Wind-Up artists Strata, Submersed, Atomship, Seven Wiser, Edgewater and Mark Collie. They've imported talent like Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Queens of the Stone Age, Smile Empty Soul, Trapt, Chevelle, Damageplan, and Hatebreed. And the best track on the disc is from returning artists Drowning Pool, with a new permanent frontman, Jason "Gong" Jones.
"Step Up" is a great, straight-forward rock tune. It kicks some serious ass, and opens the disc with a bang. From there, the next four tracks are great, going with new stuff from Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, Queens, and track five, "Broken" by Seether and Amy Lee. Lee is the lead singer from Evanescence, and this song souinds like it belongs on one of ther albums. Its powerful, and very good.
From there, it lulls in mediocraty, with nothing catching my ear until "Slow Chemical" from Finger Eleven. Its not a new tune, but its still pretty good. After that, the other half of Evanescence, Ben Moody, makes his vocal debut with "The End Has Come", a melodic and atmospheric single. Great. The final bunch of tracks are all right, and the album ends with Mark Collie, of all people. After getting blasted with hard rock tunes, it ends on a morose country tune from one of the most unorthodox artists in Nashville.
All in all, its a great soundtrack. It has the same feeling as Daredevil, and I'm hoping that the movie has the same dark feeling that the soundtrack does. Awesome. 5 of 5.
