Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
After last year's amazing windfall box-office of Pirates 2, the fact that it was based on a Disney theme park ride was all but forgotten. That film made over 1 Billion dollars. Yes, folks, it is the third highest grossing movie of all time. Now, one year later, the supposed final part of the series is here.
We last left our heros in dire peril. Jack Sparrow had gone down with his ship, the Black Pearl, into the Kraken, and Davey Jones' Locker for eternity. Elizabeth and Will have gone to Calypso for help, and she has ressurrected Captain Barbossa to help get Jack back. The East India Trading Company, led by the evil Cutler Beckett, has Davey Jones and the Flying Dutchman under his control. They've been wiping out pirates as fast as they can, and Barbossa is trying to get the 9 Pirate Lords together to fight back.
Jack is one of those Lords, and they need to get him back from the Locker. They go from Singapore to the underworld, and back again, picking up Jack and the Pearl. They attempt to make it to Shipwreck Cove for the summit, but are stopped along the way by Beckett and Jones. Several double crosses later, and the summit takes place. Jack gets Elizabeth voted as Pirate King, and his father makes an appearance as keeper of the Pirate Code. She votes they go to war with Beckett.
Calypso, it seems is the embodiment of the sea goddess, and is also Davey Jones' love. They had a falling out, and Barbossa convinces her that it was Jones' fault. They free the godess, and she creates a maelstrom in which the Pearl and Dutchman fight viciously. The battle is huge, and kind of drawn out. In the end, everyone gets what they really want, and isn't that what counts?
Overall, this one is not as good as the last one. Dead Man's Chest was one action piece after another, but this one had waaaay too many lulls in it. There seemed to be very little chemistry between Bloom's Will Turner and Knightley's Elizabeth. All he cared about was saving his father, which he did in the end. And was anyone else annoyed by the multiple Jack Sparrows? The only one that cracked me up was the Dutchman-crewmember-guy. He kept dropping his brain, which was hilarious. The other really enjoyable part was watching Depp and Rush interact as Sparrow and Barbossa. They had me chuckling most of the movie. It killed the time waiting for the action scenes to come around. Most of the loose ends are tied up in this one, but it still leaves it open for a fourth. And if that happens, it'll probably suck a lot of balls.
I'm giving this one a 6, and I'm hoping they leave it at that.
