Pirates of the Carribbean: Deadman's Chest
By the time I got into the theatre to see this film, it had already surpassed the $1 billion mark. Yes, it is the third film ever to reach that point, and I was understandably curious to see why. The other two films, Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, I'd seen in the theatre, so why not?
I enjoyed the first Pirates film, finding it a good mix of humor, action, and special effects. Johnnyy Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jonathon Price and a few others all return for the sequel, which pits Jack Sparrow against Davey Jones himself. Apparantly, Jack made a deal with Jones to captain the Black Pearl for 13 years, and his time is almost up. Will Turner's believed dead father, Bootstrap Bill, visits Sparrow, reminding our hero of his bargain. Meanwhile, Will is blackmailed into finding Sparrow, and sets sail to retreive his compass.
Davey Jones is the captain of the Flying Dutchman, a mix of wood and sea creatures, much like the crew. As they stay under the rule of Jones, they are becoming more like sea creatures, their souls forever doomed to wander the sea. Jones finally catches up with Sparrow, but Jack promises to trade 100 souls for his own, starting with Will. As Sparrow goes looking for 99 more souls, he comes across Elizabeth and his old nemesis Norrington. Using the compass, they follow it to where the heart of Davey Jones is said to rest. With it, they can control Jones and the Kraken which Jones controls. After some hilarious hijinks, Jones sends the Kraken after the Pearl, and most of the crew escapes. All but Jack.
The heart is kept by Norrington, who presents it to the East India Trading company. The Pearl crew look for a way to get Jack back, and are presented with Captain Barbossa, in human form, and the task to go to Worlds End.
This on ran a little long, but there was a lot of story. It was paced well, and the effects were the most amazing ones I've seen in a long time. The blending of man and sea creature was flawless, and the Dutchman was a sight to behold. The cast was great for the whole film, especially Bill Nighy as Jones, Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap, and the original cast as a whole. The end left a lot in the air, and kind of ended abruptly, but they filmed the third film, At Worlds End, at the same time, and will be out next spring. I thoroughly enjoyed this flick and I'm going to say it was one of the best all round films I've seen this year. A 10, which I think is the first one I've given out this summer. Couldn't have been better.
