Halloween
Yes, I ahve seen very few movies thie summer, but I have tried to make the ones I see count. With the exception of License to Wed, I think I've accomplished that goal. The Rob Zombie remake of horror classic Halloween falls into the category of must-see for the summer of 2007.
I am a Rob Zombie fan, from his music to his first two forays into film, House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. When I heard he was 're-envisioning' John Carpenter's classic horror flick, I felt pretty indifferent about it. Then, of course, news of the cast and plot grabbed my attention, and I was pretty excited for the release this summer.
The flick itself was pretty different from the original, with the first hour focussing on Micheal Myers' early home life, which sucked, and his initial killings. Then, we see Micheal interacting with Dr. Loomis, and how well that goes. The last hour, which for me was interrupted by a fire alarm, shows more like what the original showed. Myers returning to his home and wreaking havok until he finds his sister. A lot of people die, and a lot of screaming happens.
As always with Zombie's work, his characters are off-kilter, but pretty well fleshed out. Myer's family includes a William Forsythe step-father, and a Sherri Moon Zombie as a mother. Malcolm MacDowell plays Dr. Loomis, whose fate here isn't as pleasent as the original's. Laurie Strode is played by new-comer Scout Taylor-Compton, and the man himself is played by Tyler Mane, best known to audiences as Sabertooth from X-Men. Zombie also throws is faces from his other movies, playing cops, which made me laugh.
Overall, this was an entertaining flick, remake or not. Much like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake a couple of years ago. I was entertained the entire time, and isn't that what going to the movies is all about? 8 out of 10.
