My Thoughts
I loved her first album, No Angel. I thought it was sublime, and positively harmonic with my life at the time of its release. Her angst was in tune with my own, and she spoke to me through her lyrics and haunting melodies.
So, understandably, I was hyped for her follow-up. Hell, I've been waiting four years for it. The first single, "White Flag", is flawless. It drew me in just like every song on the last album. Just that taste of her voice and message was like returning to a warm bed. So comfortable and relaxing.
Well, it turns out that the album is much like that warm, comfortable bed. It will put you right to sleep. Now, don't get me wrong. I like this album, just not as much as I liked the last one. There is less angst here, and much more happiness. Happiness is good, but it tends to not make for good music. Remember when Scott Weiland got sober? The Stone Temple Pilots started doing crap like "Days of the Week".
The melodies are the same haunting tones of the first, only mellowed out. That, coupled with lyrics that are far too positive, it just makes me sleepy. She needs to liven some things up, and you wait for it to come. But it never does. so sadly, I'm going to have to give this ethereal beauty's second effort a 3 of 5.
