(the) AFFLICTED (people):those plagued with Dar-Kosis Disease. "Finding this poor fellow in the Voltai, so far from the natural routes and fertile areas of Gor, I suspected he might have escaped, if that was possible, from one of the Pits. "What is your name?' I asked. "I am of the AFFLICTED," said the weird, cringing figure. "The AFFLICTED are dead. The dead are nameless." Pg. 151, Tarnsman of Gor.

AH-IL (measurement): a unit of measure, the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, c. 18"; analoguous to the Earth cubit; 10 ah-il equal one ah-ral

AHN (time): the Gorean hour, of which there are 20 in a Gorean day; it consists of 40 ehn (minutes). "The shadows of the pasang stones had grown long, and, judging by the angle of these shadows (for the stones are set in such a way as to serve also as sundials) it was past the fourteenth Gorean AHN, or hour." Pg. 26, Outlaw of Gor.

AH-RAL (measurement): a unit of measure equalling 10 ah-il, or approx. 180"

AL-KA (noun): first letter of the Gorean alpha- bet; corresponds to the Earth letter 'A'. "AL-KA," I repeated. We looked at one another, and both of us laughed. A tear of amusement formed along the side of his sharp nose, and his pale blue eyes twinkled. I had begun to learn the Gorean alphabet." Pg. 38, Tarnsman of Gor.

AL-KA (person): a slave, twin to Ba-Ta, whom Tarl Cabot met in the Sardar Mountain home of the Priest-Kings, freed after the Nest War by Misk, a Priest-King. "He is already known to AL-KA, who brought you to the House of Clark in Thentis." Pg. 179, Assassin of Gor.

ALARM BAR (noun): Metal tubes, struck to alarm of impending danger. "An ALARM BAR, a hollow metal tube struck by hammers, began to ring in frenzy." Pg. 199, Tarnsman of Gor.

ALARM BUGLES (noun): Horns to alert a city or force to an upcoming attack. "Periodically the shrill notes of ALARM BUGLES would pierce the air, as forces from Ar emerged to do battle on the plains before the city." Pg. 177, Tarnsman of Gor.

ALBRECHT (person): a Warrior of the Kassar Camp. Nomads of Gor.

ALL COMRADES (people): a warrior society of the Kaiila tribe of Red Savages; aka the Fighting Hearts

AMUSEMENTS OF THARNA (festival): a festival of sorts put on in the city of Tharna where prisoners of Tharna are put through rigorous contests for the amusements of the Women of the city, its beginning signified by the dropping of a golden scarf by the Tatrix. "The golden scarf fluttered to the sands of the arena and the Tatrix resumed her throne, reclining upon its cushions. The voice speaking through the trumpet said, "Let the Amusements of Tharna begin." Pg. 111, Outlaw of Gor.

ANCHOR-HOOKS (noun): anchors which are used to hold ships in place, one usually is placed at the stem, one at the stern. "Soon, each drawn by two warriors, the ANCHOR-HOOKS, curved and three-pronged, not unlike large grappling irons, emerged dripping from the mud of the marsh. These ANCHOR-HOOKS, incidentally, are a great deal lighter than the anchors used in the long galleys, and the round ships." Pg. 61, Raiders of Gor.

ANDREAS (person): of the Caste of Poets from the desert city of Tor, as told in the Outlaw of Gor, however in Assassin of Gor He was referred to by Tarl as being of the Caste of Singers. "I could never again face those I had known, Kron of Tharna, ANDREAS of Tor...." Pg. 88, Raiders of Gor.

ANTISTHENES (person): a captain of Port Kar. "I rose to my feet. "ANTISTHENES, Captain," I said, "I am grateful for your concern." Pg. 167, Raiders of Gor.

APHRIS (person): the richest woman in Turia, money given after her father, Tethrar's death, Kamchak paid 10,000 bars of gold for her, she became His slave, then was freed by Him, but she refused to be freed, and He made her Ubara of the Tuchuks. "This struck fire in APHRIS of Turia. She suddenly straightened indignantly and cried out, "Not I--Not APHRIS of Turia!" Pg. 136, Nomads of Gor.

AR (noun): a letter of the Gorean alphabet.

AR (place): the name of an important Gorean city-state. "Yes," said the Older Tarl, "And there," he said, poking downward with his finger, "is the City of AR, hereditary enemy of Ko-ro-ba, the central city of Marlenus, who intends to be the Ubar of all Gor." Pg. 64, Tarnsman of Gor.

ARANI (people): a minor tribe of the Tahari; they are a vassal tribe of the Aretai

ARETAI (people): a major tribe of the Tahari; their vassal tribes are the Arani, Luraz, Raviri, Tajuks, Tashid, Ti, and Zevar; their war-cry is 'Aretai Victorious!"

ARIA (people): of Ar

ARMORED GATCH (animal): a marsupial mammal which inhabits the rainforests inland of Schendi

ASSASSINS, CASTE OF (group): the caste of those who kill for pay; exists only in Ar; their caste color is black. "When he of the CASTE OF ASSASSINS has been paid his gold and has received his charge he affixes on his forehead that sign, that he may enter whatever city he pleases, that none may interfere with his work." Pg. 7, Assassin of Gor.

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX (date): the same as fall on Earth. "It was fourth day of the sixth passage hand, shortly before the AUTUMNAL EQUINOX, which in the common Gorean calendar begins the month of Se'Kara." Pg. 1, Raiders of Gor.

BAKAHS (people): a minor tribe of the Tahari; they are a vassal tribe of the Kavars

BAKERS, CASTE OF (people): the group of people who make their living by making and selling baked goods. "At one time, I gathered from Dina, her father's shop had been the most famed of the baking shops of Turia, most of which are owned by Saphrar of Turia, whose interests range widely, though operated naturally, as Gorean custom would require, by members of the CASTE OF BAKERS." Pg. 237, Nomads of Gor.

BANA (noun): jewelry, of precious metals and stones, worn by free persons

BARA {command}: at this command, a slavegirl will lie on her stomach, with her wrists crossed behind her back, ready for binding, and with her ankles crossed, ready for binding

BARBARIAN (person): a native of the planet Earth; usually used in a derogatory sense in reference to slavegirls from that planet. "You know," said Kamchak, "the little BARBARIAN wears your chain well." Pg. 158, Nomads of Gor.

BASKET HITCH (knot): a knot which is used to tie baskets to hooks on saddles. "This is the BASKET HITCH," I told her, gesturing for her to put out one hand. "It is used for fastening a carrying basket to hooks on certain tarn saddles." Pg. 81, Assassin of Gor.

BA-TA (noun): second letter of the Gorean alphabet; corresponds to the Earth letter 'B' "The expressions 'Al-Ka' and 'BA-TA' are the first two letters of the Gorean alphabet. In effect these men had no names, but were simply known as Slave A and Slave B." Pg. 94, Priest-Kings of Gor.

BA-TA (person): a cloned twin of Al-ka, both of whom were freed during the Nest War by Misk, a Priest King. "I am Mul BA-TA," said the other, "honored slave of the glorious Priest-Kings." Pg. 94, Priest-King of Gor.

BATH GIRL (person): a slave who serves Those coming to the Pools. "...there were of course the BATH GIRLS of Ar, of which Nela was one, said to be the most beautiful of all Gor." Pg. 165, Assassin of Gor.

BAZI PLAGUE (disease): a deadly, rapidly- spreading disease with no known cure; its symptoms include pustules which appear all over the body, and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes

BAZI TEA (drink): an herbal beverage served hot & heavily sugared; traditionally drunk 3 tiny cups at a time, in rapid succession

BEJAR (person): a Captain of Port Kar. "When there was silence, it was suddenly, unexpectedly broken by the voice of BEJAR, the dark-skinned captain with the long, straight hair." Pg. 161, Raiders of Gor.

BELT DANCE (dance): a dance which the slaves head must NEVER move above the belt of the Master, her position is always low to the ground, never rising up further then where the Masters beltline is. "The BELT DANCE is performed with a Warrior. She now writhed on the furs at his feet, moving as though being struck with a whip. A white silken cord had been knotted about her waist; in this cord was thrust a narrow rectangle of white silk,perhaps about two feet long. About her throat, close-fitting and snug, there was a white-enameled collar, a lock collar. She no longer wore the band of steel on her left ankle." Pg. 186, Assassin of Gor.

BINA (noun): slave jewelry, usually consisting of plain metals, colored string, wooden or cheap glass beads; sometimes used as a slave name

BINDING FIBER (noun): stout twine made of strips of leather or of a fiber like hemp; a piece long enough to circle a slavegirl's waist 2-3 times is often used as a belt for her slave tunic. "He had no BINDING FIBER, no slave hood, no tarn. Yet this absence of equipment did not deter him, nor did he seem to regard his deprivations in these particulars as worthy of note." Pg. 218, Nomads of Gor.

BINDING STRAP (noun): a strap 3/4" wide and 18" long commonly used for binding the wrists and/or ankles of prisoners and slaves

BINT (fish): small carnivorous freshwater fish which inhabits the rivers of the rainforests inland of Schendi; a large school of bints can strip a carcass in minutes; similar to the piranha of Earth

BLACK DAGGER, MARK OF THE (symbol): when an Assassin receives His payment of gold, and the name of the person He is too kill, he places a "black dagger" on His forehead, that way He can go anywhere He wants without being bothered by anyone. "Guardsmen did not detain him, for he wore on his forehead the MARK OF THE BLACK DAGGER." Pg. 6, Assassin of Gor.

BLACK GOLD (money): the money which is paid an assassin is referred to as black gold. "It is BLACK GOLD." He then turned away, and began to grope his way from the place of the game." Pg. 38, Assassin of Gor.

BLACK SHIPS (noun): the black ships were used for their color and ease of hiding, to transport goods such as slaves, weapons smuggled from Earth to be used in attacking the Priest-Kings and hopefully taking over Gor. "He is now, chained, on his way to the Sardar, along with the materials taken from the room of the beast and what had been brought in from the BLACK SHIPS." Pg. 394, Assassin of Gor.

BLACK WINE (drink): like earth coffee; traditionally served with white and yellow sugars and heavy bosk cream

BLUE-SKY RIDERS (people): a warrior society of the Fleer tribe of Red Savages

BOLA (weapon): a weapon whose ends have "weights" of sorts, attached to a long rope. Held with the ends together, in the middle, one would start it spinning over their head and release it to wrap around the "prey's" legs, or elsewhere. "Kamchak was a skilled instructor in these matters and freely, hours at a time, until it grew too dark to see, supervised my practice with such fierce tools as the lance, the quiva, and BOLA." Pg. 66, Nomads of Gor.

BONDAGE KNOT (noun): a knot, tied by a slavegirl in her hair on the right side of her face; it is a silent plea to her master that she be raped

BOND-MAID (person): the term for a slavegirl used in Torvaldsland

BOND-MAID GRUEL (food): made with raw parsit....see slave porridge

BOSK (animal): a large, shaggy, long-horned bovine similar to the Earth ox. the Wagon People herd it and they are also kept on ranches in the northern part of Gor. "The bosk....is an oxlike creature. It is a huge, shambling animal, with a thick, humped neck and long shaggy hair. It has a wide head and tiny red eyes, a temper to match that of a sleen, and two long wicked horns that reach out from its head and suddenly curve, forward to terminate in fearful points. Some of these horns, on the larger animals, measured from tip to tip, exceed the length of two speers." Pg. 5, Nomads of Gor. "The meat was a steak, cut from the loin of a BOSK, a huge, shaggy, long-horned, ill-tempered bovine which shambles in large, slow-moving herds across the prairies of Gor." Pg. 45, Priest-Kings of Gor.

BOSK (person): a name given to Tarl when taken slave by Telima in the rence islands. "She walked about me. "Your back is broad," she said. "You are strong, but stupid." She laughed. "I shall call you BOSK," she said." Pg. 26, Raiders of Gor.

BOSK HORN (noun): used by the Wagon Peoples to alert their camps or sound an alarm, made from a bosk horn. "We heard the BOSK HORNS of the Paravaci signaling to the assembled Thousands." Pg. 263, Nomads of Gor.

BOSK WHIP(noun): "Beside him, coiled, perhaps as a symbol of power, lay a BOSK WHIP." Pg. 43, Nomads of Gor.

BOW (weapon): "I learned as well the rope and BOW. The BOW, of course, small for use from the saddle, lacks the range and power of the Gorean longbow or crossbow; still at close range, with considerable force, firing rapidly, arrow after arrow, it is a fearsome weapon." Pg. 66-67, Nomads of Gor.

BRACELETS (position): a position for binding. "BRACELETS!" snapped Ho-Sorl suddenly, and Phyllis flung her wrists behind her back, threw back her head and turned it to one side, the instantaneous response of a trained girl." Pg. 214, Assassin of Gor.

BRAK BUSH (plant):a bush of the desserts whos branches branches of it are nailed to house doors during the Waiting Hand to discourage the entry of bad luck into the house for the New Year. "Almost all dorrs, including that of the House of Cernus, had nailed to them some branches of the BRAK BUSH, the leaves of which, when chewed, have a purgative effect." Pg. 211. Assassin of Gor.

BRAND (noun): a mark burned into the flesh of animals and slaves to mark them as property; specific brands include the kef (common kajira brand), Dina, Palm, mark of Treve, mark of Port Kar, mark of the Tahari, mark of Torvaldsland (a girl whose belly lies under the sword), Tuchuk brand of the 4 bosk horns. "The BRAND itself, in the case of a girls, is a rather graceful mark, being the initial letter of the Gorean expression for slave in cursive script. If a male is branded, the same initial is used, but rendered in a block letter." Pg. 187, Outlaw of Gor.

BRAND, PENALTY (noun): small 1/4" brands that mark a convicted liar, thief, traitor, etc.

BRAND, THIEF'S (noun): tiny 1/4", 3-pronged brand worn on the cheek of those of the Caste of Thieves

BRANDING RACK (noun): a device to which a new slavegirl is chained for branding; her hands are chained above her head, but the rest of her body is free to move, except for whichever thigh is to be branded, this being held motionless in a large vise

BRED PASSION SLAVE (person): a woman who is, from birth on Gor, raised in the ways of pleasures and every way of serve, usually bred for a special feature. They are highly trained and knowledgeable in the ways of pleasure. "One was slender, a fragile girl, with deep gray eyes; the other had dark eyes and hair, a body that might have been that of a BRED PASSION SLAVE." Pg. 400, Assassin of Gor.

BREEDING WINE (drug): a sweet beverage which counteracts the effects of slave wine, making a slavegirl fertile; also called second wine

BROAD-HEADED ARROW (weapon): SEE TUCHUK BARBED ARROW. "Had I used the BROAD-HEADED ARROW, or the Tuchuk Barbed arrow, one would, in removing it, commonly thrust the arrow completely through the wound..." Pg. 79, Raiders of Gor.

BUCKLER (shield): a small shield used in fighting. "BUCKLER and short sword are perhaps most popular, but there are few weapons on Gor which are not seen over a period of three or four days of the games." Pg. 189, Assassin of Gor.

BUILDERS, CASTE OF (group): the caste which includes architects, draftsmen, stonemasons, etc.; the Builders are one of the five High Castes included in the government of Gor; their caste color is brown. "The walls were crowded, and I supposed many upon them used the long glasses of the CASTE OF BUILDERS to observe the field of the stakes." Pg. 113, Nomads of Gor.
