BAILE

In the beginning, one needed only a voice and a rhythm to make music. One could use their hands and feet to emphasize aspects of the music, thus creating the first form of Flamenco dance. Instruments were not used at that time. Instead, the body and its language, along with voice, were used. Like Jazz, the heart of Flamenco is improvisation. It is the spontaneous outburst of expression through music and dance. The rhythmic stepping and clapping mixes with the intricate footwork that sets the furious pace of a flamenco masterpiece. As one listens closely, the fear-driven anger and outrage of the gypsies, Moors and Jews can be felt, the pounding heels of the dancers emulating the frantic heartbeats the fugitives must have had when they fled from one place to another.

Flamenco is a passionate art, created from a mixture of intense emotions that have steadily increased in ferocity as time went by. Just as many people use their hands when they speak, so too do the Flamenco dancers weave their own hands through the air, their fingers beckoning for aid that never came, as the dancers strives to convey a message for others to understand and learn.

Nowadays, in Southern parts of Spain, flamenco principles of dance are taught to all ages and both sexes. The basic forms are drilled into students until they can dance the steps in their sleep. From there, improvisation becomes the teacher and new dance moves are created. Thus, flamenco celebrities are born.
