Sci-fi ID: Sheena on Sheena

Special powers?
"Shape-shifting — she can morph into animals — and she goes into another character, Darakna, who has fangs. She’s like a wild animal and covers herself in mud. I spend a lot of time with mud on me, but they use a rich spa mud, so it’s like an instant allover facial."

Fantasy appeal?
"People love the idea of changing into something else, being able to hide or becoming a stronger being. I don’t know if I’d want to shape-shift into another creature, but I spent my adolescence wanting to recreate myself, so maybe I’d just shape-shift myself a little shapelier."

Pick one: beach life or the supernatural?
"Oh, Sheena for sure. I wouldn’t want to go back to Baywatch now. I was thrilled to take on this character. She wears a bikini, sure, but it’s not a bimbo thing. She’s sexy, but she’s also smart and there is depth. People think that if you show some cleavage, you must be as dumb as a mop, so this character has been kind of nice for me."

Best Sheena moments?
"Working with the chimpanzee has been wonderful. He wears these little diapers, but they come off when he’s shooting with me. And every time, he pees on me. It hasn’t happened to anybody else, but it happens to me every single time. It’s quite an experience, like acid rain — it really stings. And every time I have
to hit somebody, we’ll have to do a close-up and I always really hit the guy by mistake. I’m not swift at hitting and my movements are a bit slow, but the poor guy gets nailed every time. Of course, the crew loves it. They’ve started taking bets on me."

Favorite sci-fi thing?
"Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He was so exciting. I loved that show."

Do you believe in aliens?
"I believe there is life on other planets. What right do we have to say there’s not another life form out there?"

Luckily, Gena's change of role entails swapping the red bikini for jungle briefs

Lifeguarded from 1995 to 1998 as Neely Capshaw

Most appalling Baywatch moment:

“I was rescuing one of the extras, and he grabbed my breast. And he had the worst breath. It was disgusting. They had Altoids over by the camera, but that wasn’t going to cut it—he needed an acid bath. I don’t know where they found some of these people, but this guy was foul. I had to stop. I said, ‘I’m not doing this. I can’t take it anymore.’ After the grab, I told him, ‘You stink and your breath is foul. Clean yourself up!’”

Speedos?
“Bad. Cover the goods. It’s not flattering . . . and the water gets cold.”

Baywatch secret revealed:
“California beaches are freezing. Baywatch makes it look as if it’s so sunny and warm, but the water is 57 degrees. It was insane—Yasmine and I got hypothermia once!”
