80s Music?

Well I thought that the title of the show was pretty obvious, but "That 80s Show" plays 80s music. But what exactly is 80s music? Glad you asked my friend.

I (and most people) like to define "80s Music" as popular music made between the years 1980 through 1989. 10 years of music is quite a bit in any time period, but especially in the 80s when styles went from the end of disco to new wave to the hair bands to the beginning of the grunge movement all within the span of a decade.

So what do I consider to be 80s music? Well lots of stuff by more obscure artists like Big Country, Wall of Voodoo, Toni Basil, Breathe, and The Tubes. But the 80s was a time of corporate everything and of course I also love the big guns like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Culture Club, The B-52's, The Go-Go's, Def Leppard, and of course my personal favorite, New Kids On The Block.

But Why 80s Music?

I have always loved music, pretty much all types of music. Some of my favorite artists are not from the 80s (which you can see if you go to visit my links page). When I got to college I noticed that while lots of people loved new music, they also had a nostalgia for, as Bob Seger would say, "that old time rock and roll." And so I decided I was going to be the one to bring it to them.

I really don't know where and when the whole 80s musical obsession started for me. I guess it reminds me of a time when I was innocent and pure and unconditionally happy. Which is not to say that I am no longer innocent, pure, or unconditionally happy, only that these things are much harder to come by in this day and age.

And so, in the words of the Stray Cats I decided to "rock this town" and "That 80s Show" was created.

As my friend Erin Riley would say "Hasta Pasta"
