Coiled, black and powerful
In its' new box,
The stethoscope awaits my touch.
Gingerly, I pick it up
With anxious fingers
Anticipating the feel of
Its' icy diaphragm.
In front of the mirror,
I arrange it around my neck
With great care,
Trying to insure
That it will appear
Professional.
Suddenly,
I am transformed !
I am important, and I am medical !
This appliance of anatomy
Invites me to divine
Heretofore silent secrets
Of Lung, Heart and Bowel.
With a fervor to learn,
I will painlessly invade
Each patients' body
With this new extension
Of my thinking self;
Inner workings no longer
A mystery.
(I make certain my new stethoscope
Is visible always,
Worn like the bright diamond of
A love-struck fiancée.)
It is my desire that
Wherever I may go,
Everyone will know
I am a Nurse.
