Jyotish Discovery Forum

We now have a discussion forum on Jyotish Discovery. Please go there and post any queries on the articles, or anything you would like to discuss further on Jyotish and the Vedic sciences. If you have something of interest to contribute or advertise, please do so. This is an ezine, so I am quite happy to accept the advertising of new websites on Jyotish or anything else that promotes the cause of Jyotish provided it is respecting the holy science.

For those who are new to Jyotish, here are some pointers to help you understand the terms Gamini has used in his Starscope pages.

1. A PUSHKARA NAVAMSA/PN

Out of the 108 navamsa [an arc of 3 degrees 20 minutes] 24 are considered very fortunate and auspicious. Each sign has 2 PN. Each sign also has a specific PushKara Bhaga/PB or a degree which is even more fortunate to be born with. Also 3 out the 24 PN are Vargottama/VGN or in the same harmonic division, and they get more strength.

ARIES The 7th Libra or Thula Navamsa 20*00'-23*20' and the 9th Sagittarius/Dhanu Navamsa 26*40'-30*00' PB is the 21st degree
TAURUS The 3rd Pisces/Meena Navamsa 6*40'-10*00', and the 5th Taurus 13*20'-16*40' PB: The 14th degree. Note this is a Vargottama Navamsa/VGN:Taurus/Taurus ruled by Venus
GEMINI 6th Pisces 16*40'-20*00' and the 8th Taurus 23*20'-26*40' PB: 24th degree
CANCER The 1st Cancer Navamsa/VGN 0*-3*20', and 3rd Virgo/Kanya 6*40'-10*00'
PB: 7th degree
LEO 7th Libra 20*00-23*20' and the 9th Sagittarius 26*40'-30*00'
PB: 21st Degree
VIRGO The 3rd Pisces 6*40'-10*00'and the 5th Taurus 13*20-16*40'
PB: 14th degree
LIBRA The 6th Navamsa Pisces 16*40'-20*00', and the 8th Taurus 23*20'-26*40' PB: 24th degree
SCORPIO The 1st Cancer 0*-3*20' and the 3rd Virgo 6*40'-10*00'.
PB: 7th degree
SAGITTARIUS The 7th Libra 20*00'-23*20' and the 9th Sagittarius/VGN 26*40'-30*00' PB: 21st degree
CAPRICORN The 3rd Pisces 6*40'- 10*00'[ Note the most auspicious Abhjit Muhurtha- used in electional or Muhurtha work spans 6*40'-10*53'20" is located here for the most part]And the 5th Taurus Navamsa 13*20'-16*40' PB: 14th degree
AQUARIUS The 6th Pisces 16*40'-20*00' and the 8th Taurus 23*20'-26*40' PB: 24th degree
PISCES The 1st Cancer 0*-3*20' and the 3rd
Virgo 6*40'-10*00'
PB: the 7th degree

AND, HE ADDS

Note

1. The rulership of the PN are given to the
benefics only: Jupiter, Moon, Mercury and Venus

2. PB can be fruitfully used in electional work.

3. When Karaka planets transit PN/PB they bestow good
results accordingly to the native. Better if they are
associated with running Dashas/Planetary Periods in a
given time.

4. Three or more planets sitting on PN [especially the
Karakas Atma/Amatya [Jaimini's] and even 2 on PB in a
natal chart give strength and power.

2. NOTES ON MRITYU BHAGA/MB DEATH DEGREE Mrityu Bhaga/MB Death Degree or Station. Dr K.S.Charak's Subtleties of Medical Astrology [ New Delhi: Vision, 1996] has a fin e chapter on Mrityu Bhaga: The Inauspicious Planetary Stations. [Prasna Marga is an excellent classic. Dr B.V Raman's translation is in 2 parts. Published by Motilal Banarsidass. 2nd ed. Delhi, 1992]

Each planet, Mandi, and Lagna when it sits or transits a MB causes obstruction, frustration and health challenges. This can be safely extended to mean destruction as well, like hurt, conflict, violence when applied to nations or countries

Here is the MB table for signs/planets/Mandi/Gulika and Lagna
Note signs are Aries thru Pisces

Note: Mandi and Gulika mutual relationship [whether they are the same] is still a matter of controversy, and will be discussed in detail along with other factors as we move on.

3. When several planets transit their own MB and Lagna MB the intensity or propensity for damage is higher.

4. If a hostile planet for a given Lagna passes that Lagna's MB it is also a period that is generally challenging. For example: the 25th degree in Gemini
is Mars' MB. Mars owns both 6 and 11 houses for the Gemini Lagna and becomes the most hostile planet. The 22nd degree is the Gemini Lagna's MB. When Mars passes both MB's it is a period more likely to cause hurt to a Gemini person if other factors unfolding in a person/s natal chart at that time are supportive.

For example : A mutual exchange of houses by Mercury, the Lagna Lord and Mars . Mercury passing 10th degree in Scorpio when Mars is on MB in Gemini
Because Mercury as lagna lord represents the body and his transit of the 6th house [Scorpio for the Gemini Ascendant] with Mars in lagna requires much mindfulness. Note Mercury also is the ruler of the 4th house of vehicles and property. When the 4th lord goes to the 6th chances for hurt and accidents/sickness are high.

5. Note also the Ashtakavarga both Samudaya or the total for each house and Binna for each planet. If they are low below 27 [Samudaya or Total] and 4 [Binna or Individual] it is not good. Lower the worse. On AshtakaVarga a few good works to start with are by BV Raman (New Delhi: UBSPD, 8th ed, 1992) , Ashtakavarga by Patel and Aiyar (New Delhi: Sagar, Revised ed, 1996). Dots of Destiny: Applications of Ashtakavarga by Vinay Aditya (New Delhi:Vision, 1996).

For Rahu and Ketu's Ashtakavarga thre are 2 standard methods of allocation.
A. On the premise that Rahu is akin to Saturn , and Ketu to Mars. For example if Rahu is placed on your 3rd house =Leo, see the bindus
[benefic values] donated by Saturn [in his Ashtakavarga] to Leo. If the value is 3, give that Rahu.
B. Based on the dispositor theory . The same Rahu in Leo. The ruler of Leo is the Sun [the dispositor of Rahu]Check the Ashatakavarga of the Sun in your chart. If the Sun has donated 5 Bindus, pass it to Rahu.

6. MB and Atma Karaka. The strength of PutraKaraka, Gnati Karaka [Jaimini's] have to be studied as well. K.N. Rao's Predicting Through Jaimini's Chara Dasha (Lucknow:Vani,1995) is a very helpful book, and an
original piece of research

7. Vital thing to keep in mind is there is nothing black or white in Vedic astrology. You will find that some MBs are cuddling PNs or PushKara Navamsa. In all situations examine as many factors as you can : a planets's strength by its placement, association, aspect in Varga/ Divisional/ Harmonic, and even Varshapal or the Annual chart, Varga Bala, the running Dashas, the Transits. MB in PN can mutually dilute both favourable and unfavourable effects

8. We do not predict on a single or even a few factors. An examination must be based on the larger matrix of planetary relationships. A work that can be strongly recommended is Astrology, Destiny and the Wheel of Time by K.N.Rao. (Lucknow: Vani. 2nd ed 1995)

9. Like the Mrityu Bhaga or MB, the 22nd Drekkana Lord/22DL [the ruler of the 8th house in the Drekkana Chart. Simply count the 22nd Drekkana from the Lagna. A Drekkana is a 1/3 division of 30 degree sign] the planets placed in 8th house have the capacity to cause hurt and frustrations when they get a chance.

10. The 64th Navamsa is similar to 22DL. Here it is narrowed down to 3 degree and 20 minutes from 10 degrees. The arcs of Navamsa and Drekkana respectively. The 64th Navamsa falls in the 8th house from the lagna as well. See who are the 64th Navamsa Lord/64NL from both Lagna and the natal Moon. [See Essentials of Medical Astrology by Dr. K.S. Charak. New Delhi:Vision, 1994]

11. In Nadi Astrology [see Patel above] the Brighu Bindu/BB is the Lagna Sputa or the Degree of the Lagna or the Rising applied to the 8th house. For example: If your Lagna is 9 degrees Aries your 22DL is Mars again, and your BB from Lagna would be the 9 degree in Scorpio. The 64 NL from the Lagna is Mercury who owns the 3rd Navamsa in Scorpio which is Aries. Do the same from your Moon. If your Moon was sitting on the 27 degree in Aquarius for example, the BB would be the 27 degree in Virgo. And the 64NL from the Moon is the ruler or owner of the 9th or the last h Navamsa in Virgo and that is Virgo and Mercury again. Now you need to carefully evaluate the strength of these signs/houses and/planets. Note that Virgo in KalaPurusha is the 6th house and Scorpio is the 8th house which have a special association with sickness/disease.

Note: When slow-moving malefics Rahu and Saturn especially pass the sensitive points, the duration of the effects can be longer. Fast moving planets especially Mars and the Sun and Venus , Mercury and the Moon can trigger an event.

12. Note Planets sitting on and or passing Sarpa and Pasha Drekkana: The Sarpa Drekkanas are the 2nd and 3rd in Cancer, 1st and 2nd in Scorpio and the 3rd in Pisces. Planets sitting on Sarpa D have capacity to cause sickness in their Dashas, especially if they also happen to be sitting in or rulers of 6, 8, 12 houses, if they are Retrograde /R . Pasha Drekkaanas are 2nd and 3rd in Libra, 1st and 3rd in Capricorn, and the 1st in Aquarius. Planets on these in conjunction with other factors above can be hostile and obstructing.

13 Gandantha Kshetra or Field/GD; These are the 9th or the last Navamsa of Cancer and the 1st in Leo, 9th in Scorpio and the 1st in Sagittarius, and the 9th in Pisces and the 1st in Aries. A total of 6 Navamsas. Hart Defouw and Robert Svoboda have done a strong chapter on Nakshatras in Light on Life ( London: Penguin, 1996) Planets on these get their energies negated/liberated. And Malefics can get really mean [ K.T. Shubhakaran
has done a larger 2 part work on Nakshatra Based Predictions published by (Sagar. New Delhi, 1991,1994). Also a handy work on Nakshatras by Dennis M. Harness. Published by (Motilal Banarsidass. Delhi, 2000) and also by (Lotus Press, 1999).
