From Mike Elling : "I know there is a story here, but I would not know where to begin."
CG : I agree with Mike, there is a story - actually several of them. We've all seen auction descriptions on eBay for items that have caught our eye. But this are a whole different story. Interesting and entertaining? To say the least, yes! You will just have to read them yourself to understand. But remember, these are live auctions and these stories will only be available for a certain length of time. Enjoy!

Q&A: Post your questions online @ the QuestionF orum

Q From me. CG : Do you have a particular item, or items, that you have been looking for a long time to complete part of your collection, or something you want - but have not as yet been able to find? Send it so all of us can help you look. You never know where it may turn up! E-mail: MyMissingItem@thesodafizz.com

From Jim White : I am looking for a 12-ounce red and white labeled "KEEN" soda pop bottle. It has "Joplin Missouri" on the front label, but does not say root beer. The bottle dates to about 1956. Thanks!

Q From Gloria Reiser : Can you offer any pointers for recognizing the 1937 "Running Girl" reproduction tray?

I checked The Encyclopedia of Coca-Cola Trays, An Unauthorized Collector's Guide, by Frank Laughlin, 2001. The colors in the reproduction are "not as good" as the original. But without an original to compare it with, how would you know? Size, both are 10.5" by 13.25", so that doesn't help. Border? Both are red, with gold edge, still no help. Then finally, one difference. The original has "The American Artworks" as the Manufacturer, and the reproduction has "nothing."

So, I guess according to this, bottom line is, if it has "The American Artworks" on it, you've probably gotten the original 1937 tray, if it doesn't, it is probably a 1970s repo....

The original values in this book @ $150-375, the repo @ $20-40.

Q From Richard Matthews : My grandfather recently passed away and I inherited a collection of silk-screen soda bottle label proofs on 8.5" x 11" card stock and I am seeking some information about them.

One example of a label that I have is a "Five Point" in dark blue and white which says it is bottled "By Authority of National NuGrape Co., of Atlanta." The information on the back of the card gives the "run" date as May 6, 1938.

Some of the others I have are: "Indian Queen Root Beer" (Orange Smile Co.); "Cleo Cola" (Cleo Syrup Corp.); "Kreemo Special Root Beer" (Cherry Blossom Co.); "Double Cola" (Seminole Flavor Co.); "Rose Bud Root Beer" (National NuGrape Co.); "Lazenby's Liquid Sunshine" (Liquid Sunshine Co.); "Natural Set Up" (Natura Set Up Sales Corp.); "Pop Kola" (The Braser Co.); "Kist Root Beer" (Citrus Products Co.); "Twang" (C.O. & W.D. Sethness Co.); "Lime Cola" (Lime Cola Co.); "Sweetheart Kola" (Grimes Mfg. Co.); "Cheer Up" (Orange Smile Co.); "4U" (Star Bottling Co.); "Dr. Herring's Ginger Ale" (Herring Ginger Ale Co.); "Jumbo - A Super Cola" (Seminole Flavor Co.); "Waynola" (National NuGrape Co.); "Korker Lemon Soda Blender" (Virginia Dare Extract Co.); "Esquire---A Gentlemen's Set-Up" (Monarch Manufacturing Co.); "Town Hall" (Monarch Manufacturing Co); "Rums Dry Ginger Ale" (Nehi Co.); "Chaser" (The Chaser Co.); "Big Cola" (Buffalo Rock Co.); "Milk-Botl" (Natural Set Up Sales Corp.); "Plus 4" (Citrus Products Co.); "Alka-Time" (Ludford Fruit Products); "Nichol Kola" (H.R. Nicholson Co.); "Century" (Citrus Products Co.); "Buster Cola" (Orange Smile Co.) and "Tropi-Cola" (National NuGrape Co.)

On the back of each card is indicated the type of glass the label was applied to, the ink color designations, the screen number, and the date of printing.

My grandfather worked for Owens Illinois Glass Co. in the 1930's. The label proofs above were from the time he worked for Liberty Glass Co. in Supulpa OK., and all have dates in the years 1937 or 1938.

Any information on the proofs is greatly appreciated.

would think that the information alone on the proofs would be invaluable for some of these brands, as many of us as collectors probably have the bottles that once wore these labels, and would love to know what the original label looked like, the year it was used, etc.. But...
If anyone knows anything about the items that Richard describes, please E-mail Proofs@thesodafizz.com

Send your best deals, favorite item, stories, etc. and comments to MyItem@thesodafizz.com.
They are always welcome.

FYI : Buffalo Rock - Alabama's Best Kept Secret

By Michael M. Elling

For those of you who only know about Vernor's; Canada Dry, and Kentucky's Ale-8-1 as the ginger ales that are currently available in the US, it may surprise you to learn that a company in Birmingham, Alabama, has just celebrated its 100th ginger ale Anniversary last year,  in 2001.

The Buffalo Rock Bottling Company, Inc. is located on a 50-acre site at the foot of Red Mountain with seven buildings on the complex. They are the largest family-owned Pepsi-Cola bottler in the world. They also have the Dr Pepper and 7-Up franchises, as well as being sole owners of the Gapico family of fruit flavor soft drinks.

Now available in some parts of Georgia, Florida, as well as all of Alabama, the ginger ale is reaching a even wider audience. Perhaps during its second century it could become nationally known.

Of interest to collectors is a special 6-ounce clear glass bottle commemorating the 1901-2002 anniversary. The bottle is manufactured by Vitro-Mexico, and shows the classic Buffalo Rock logo in white and brown colors, similar to their standard returnable bottle issues of the 1940's and 1950's.

Beneath the logo are the terms, "Taste The Difference." The reverse of the bottle shows the nutrition and scan-code labels, the ingredients and the company web site address.

In addition, there are special 12-ounce cans currently in production. These are made by Continental, all-aluminum in yellow, white and brown colors, featuring the Buffalo Rock logo with the terms "Ginger Ale Since 1901." Immediately beneath the logo are new additional wordings, "Southern Spice When Ordinary Won't Do!"

They are quite right about that of course! Buffalo Rock has the most ginger taste of all ginger ales. Caffeine free, the product is still recommended for aiding sore throats by local pharmacists...

Currently all commemorative bottles have been sold out, but a hardbound book still is available from the company which tells about the founder, Sidney W. Lee, the family's success, and a special commemorative bottle and can opener, which may be ordered from www.buffalorock.com

OFFERED: Buffalo Rock Birmingham Commemorative Bottles and Cans! 1901-2001 Anniversary. Can deliver full or empty; 1 of each item $7.50 empty; $10.00 full postpaid parcel post. If empty, delivered with crown cap or can bottom opened. Contact for quantities; Michael M. Elling, 4042 Sidonia Rd., Sharon, TN 38255-3133, Ph: 731-973-4995, E-mail: cheromike@citlink.net
