SEAN INTERVIEW CIRCA G.A.T.S.
The following quotes were taken from an interview in which James was also present and were all prefixed with an (S)
Your music style has changed since the debut album. Is it natural for you to change direction or is it that you've just grown up?
Sean: We were young when we wrote the debut album. We were very aggressive then. We're getting older now. This is our 2nd album which we're not supposed to make (laughs)
Has your personal attitude changed since then?
Sean: I haven't changed that much really. The way I express my feelings in music has changed a bit. I've started writing emotional and sad songs.
Does touring stimulate you to write songs?
Sean: Yeah, "Drug Drug Druggy" was written whilst we were touring. I wrote it in a hotel room.
It was quite tough and hard to make this album, wasn't it?
Sean: Working wise, we didn't have any problem.
On your previous album, GT, you used a famous producer called Steve Brown. What made you bring in Dave Eringa this time?
Sean: He played keyboards on the previous album. He is a great guy, we get on very well with him.
Sean, any particular efforts you made on the current album?
Sean: I wrote "Yourself" within 3 days. Which is the biggest sense of achievement I've experienced.
You guys are all childhood friends, that's why you can concentrate and trust eachother despite hard demanding work?
Sean: We're just like family, even one of us are missing, we won't exist anymore. For example, Richey takes charge of visual influence, Nicky writes lyrics and is a brilliant bassist. We contribute everything together. That's what we call MSP.
Lastly, Sean, have you got any message for the Japanese fans?
Sean: I thoroughly enjoyed the first trip to Japan last year. I went to Hi-Fi District in Tokyo which was really exciting. I want to come back to Japan as soon as possible.
Thanks to Sean's biggest Japanese fan Naoko for translations.
SEAN INTERVIEW CIRCA THIS IS MY TRUTH
First of all, I would like you to tell me about making "Everything Must Go" album after Richey's disappearance.
Sean: I was very nervous to start with. I didn't even have a clue what to do. But our old favourite sound like Echo And The Bunnymen (song is called Ocean Rain) They've got such a cool and intriguing tune. We just wanted the forthcoming album to be similar to that. When "Design For Life" was released, we received a load of excellent reviews. We gained great confidence and pride.
How confident are you about the current album?
Sean: I haven't even thought of how good this album is going to be. With the previous album, I didn't feel too much pressure to make it. It was another big challenge for us. In the end, "If You Tolerate" reached No. 1 and we should thank the fans who'd supported us all the way through.
"This Is My Truth" has reached No. 1 which must've made you very proud and of course you can't live your own life without making music?
Sean: Only one concern I've been thinking about is what we're going to do when we finally quit the music business. To tell you the truth, I didn't enjoy it at all when we worked with Kylie Minogue. I'm still embarrassed that our debut album "Generation Terrorists" didn't reach No.1. Since then, I've been thinking that I don't wanna make so many albums.
That means, you just don't want to carry on like flogging a dead horse? (i.e. Rolling Stones and Page & Plant)
Sean: Yeah, I've no regret disbanding the band after debut album. It would have been much better if we could release compilation album in the future. We're now full of confidence and we just enjoy writing music.
