While the economy withers and trust in public institutions wanes, President Obasanjo is busy playing to the international community. Opposition politicians and much of the public question the legitimacy of Obasanjo's mandate and await the result of ANPP Presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari's legal battle. The President continues to travel abroad frequently (much to the chagrin of Nigerians who wonder how he can manage the country from abroad) to promote the mirage that he calls his economic reform program. The leadership of the Nigeria biggest organised Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday began a nationwdide strike to protest new increases in the pump price of petroleum products in the country. According to the NLC massive revenue from oil put at $3 billion has been properly managed and has not translated into better living conditions for 120 million Nigerians. Instead it said while the prices have gone up five times since the assumption of office of President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, average wage in the country have slipped in value to less than 400 dollars within the same period. Like a boiling pot, Nigeria again slipped into the clutches of sectarian violence and conflict last week, with renewed fighting reported around the Yelwa-Shendam areas of Plateau state almost a week after a pre-emptive state of emergency was declared in the state, by President Olusegun Obasanjo.
