One Scene Fest: Did Pedro's Hard Work Pay Itself Off?

One Scene Fest was a great two-day, thirty-band outing put together by Pedro Lopes, former All My Sins vocalist. Held at the Hanover House in Meriden, CT on January 5th and 6th, the fest boasted the finest in hardcore, punk, metal, emo, and noise. I was skeptical that today’s often close-minded CT scene wouldn’t be very receptive to all these different musical ventures, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Though the first day of the scene was dominated by hardcore acts like A Better Tomorrow, Biartz, Hamartia, Groundzero, Unearth, and Red Roses For A Blue Lady to name a few, there was one punk band that really stood out. Putting forth an energetic, upbeat blend of hardcore and punk were the Bloodshot Hooligans, who took the 6 pm slot. They played a great set and were the first band of the day to really warm the crowd up.

However, as I said, the hardcore domination of the first day of the fest left something to be desired. The title of One Scene started to take a very literal meaning in my mind. However, the second day provided a much-welcomed change of pace. Though not as tight as the previous day by way of set times, the second day had a great mix of all the music forms advertised. Standout sets included Scars Will Heal, As Autumn Burns, A Thousand Times No, Flat Earth Society, Final Stand, Locked in a Vacancy, and of course 100 Demons. This day really made the fest live up to its name. It brought together all these different musical styles to an extremely respectful and receptive crowd. There were no fights through the day, and everyone had fun.

This fest was without a doubt a victory for Pedro and One Scene Productions. He gave some smaller bands a shot with the big boys and packed two days full of great music. If he ever decides to put together another one, I know I’m gonna be there!
