Problems in the Pit: Egomaniacs and Metal Kids

Since the scene began, there has always been certain etiquette in the pit. The two main points are not to enter it with the intent of hurting other people, and that you should expect to be accidentally hit by a dancing kid. Simple right? Just get in there, enjoy yourself, and don’t worry about who you may knock into. Well people are still struggling with these simple guidelines, even in the new millennium. I recently attended Biohazard, All Out War, Minus, and A Better Tomorrow at the El ‘n’ Gee club in New London.

ABT hit the stage first, and Pogo and I hit the pit. Nothing new here, just slammin and having fun. Then a little trio of putzes in matching shirts sleazed in and began pretty much assaulting the kids. Pulling shirts, tackling, and one who thought it was funny to kick people with cleats. When the pit kids didn’t fight back, the testosterone-thick trio became confused and let us be. I didn’t think much of the episode at the time.

Then Minus, a metal band, was on deck. The pit was no longer for dancing. It was like Mortal Kombat. Nobody could take a hit to save their lives, they had to search out whoever hit them and retaliate. This, of course, bred fights. One of which involved three guys beating down a scrawny kid who apparently kicked one of them while dancing. Again, I didn’t think much of this. “Metal kids just dance crazy,” I thought.

So when All Out War started playing, and they’re as hardcore as it comes, I decided to get back in the pit. While dancing, a dick in a GAP shirt looked me dead in the eye and proceeded to kick me in the mouth. My teeth stabbed into my top lip, and the gash remains as I type this. Is that dancing? Aiming hits at kids in the pit? The same guy kicked Pogo in the throat, John ABT in the back of the neck, and drop-kicked Kevin ABT (who at the time was just on the pit’s outskirts). This penis was not the only one either; many others were emulating his pit behavior.

Of course Biohazard always has insane pits, but when they went on, the assholes were at peek drunkenness and just lookin for fights. More broke out while they played. Not even females were safe. I saw two girls get deliberately hit while dancing. Not bumped, but punched, by a guy aiming his shots. I was really disappointed by how people were handling themselves that night.

Why must these assholes try proving their manliness by beating up on people? To look tough or cool? We think you all look like idiots. If you were really men, you’d be able to take a hit and brush it off; not try to kill the poor kid who’s dancing and trying to enjoy a good show. I know this will never be resolved, but I had to voice my opinion.
