Narcissism and Grandiosity: Examples From Real Life

From: XXXXXX [Self-described (but not formally DIAGNOSED)as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I very much suspect we are dealing with an Internet Psychopath- who not only lie, but tell OUTRAGEOUS lies, just for the hell of it ] (Original Message) Sent: 7/18/2003 4:53 AM

Hi, guys (and gals ...:o))

If you wish to respond to this post, kindly do so in the "Ask Dr. XXXXXX" thread which I monitor daily. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Many ask me on what do I base my writings? Is it just my personal experience?

Of course not.

The content of my Web site is based on correspondence since 1996 with hundreds of people suffering from the Narcissistic Personality Disorder (narcissists)

and with thousands of their family members, friends, therapists, and colleagues.

My Yahoo!Group has almost 1400 members and my private mailing list another 3700. Well over 700 of these people have been diagnosed with NPD.

These numbers do not include the 20 or so letters I respond to DAILY.

So, I feel pretty confident in divulging the knowledge I have accumulated. I do not believe there is another person - professional or layman - with such wide exposure to pathological narcissism and its aftermath.

REALITY CHECK: "Divulging"? Are there "secrets" that other mental health professionals are not privy to? Just wondering....

All that correspondence would be considered anecdotal unless restructured into a scientific, possibly quantifiable form. All we are left with is one self-described (UNDIAGNOSED)narcissist's viewpoint and nothing else. Said writer has NO background in psychology and there is no evidence to suggest he ever tried therapy.See: [3]

Mental health professionals, on the other hand, see real life people, interact with them in real life and engage in therapeutic relationships in real life. They also have the credentials that are normally accepted by society, except for those who think the rules don't apply to them. Cyberlife is not real life nor is the exclusive pursuit of knowledge via the Internet or books or correspondence. Caveat emptor. Consider the source. ~Invicta
