It has been said that Man's intellect is unique in the animal kingdom, but it is Man's writing that is the foundation of civilization. The ability to graphically convey thoughts and information in a widely-used and uniform manner dates back to around 8,000 - 8,500 B.C. when the first pictographs were used on clay tokens to keep track of the quantities of goods bought and sold. Who could have known that writing would develop into the magnificent art that it now is, and that it would take only ten thousand years? Peter de Vries once said, "I love being a writer, what I can't stand is the paperwork." That pretty much describes writing for those of us for whom writing is much more than a passing hobby. A love/hate relationship is born and reborn with each new page, every idea that comes along and makes you think that your last idea was nothing more than fancy trash. But when you can finally look upon the finished product and you see your soul laid out for all the world to see, it's a blessing to realize that they can see you-all of you-without judging your hairstyle. The merchants of 8,500 B.C. would be proud.
