Here is a brief history of Time:

Rosecrucians:

One of the first concepts that the authors explore is the idea of an "open conspiracy" to change society in a positive way. The term comes from a book written by H. G. Wells in his later years. Wells thought it was time (1928) for small groups to engage in an "open conspiracy" to bring about positive global change. Naturally, Wells saw the "open conspiracy" as being stimulated by the best scientific brains of the day. Pauwels and Bergier then tell of several examples of such an "open conspiracy" in the past.

The first example is that of the Rosecrucians of the 17th century and their mysterious manifestos. These claimed to be from a secret brotherhood of men who sought to unify Europe along ideological and mystical lines. The authors wonder if the Rosecrucians might be the model for a modern "...secret international society of men of the highest intelligence, spiritually transformed by the profundity of their knowledge..." The authors think the answer is "yes." They write "...we have every reason to believe that a society of this nature is being formed today by the pressure of events, and that there is bound to be one in the future."

The Quixotic Dialectical Metaphysical Manifesto...

Golden Dawn:

"the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a magical fraternity founded in London in 1888 by Dr. William Wynn Westcott and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, which ceased to exist under that name in 1903 but which continued for a number of years under the names of two spin-off organizations, the Stella Matutina and the Alpha et Omega.

The Golden Dawn system of magic is not a religion, although religious imagery and spiritual concepts play an important role in its work. The Golden Dawn was designed by its founders to be an Hermetic Society dedicated to the philosophical, spiritual, and psychic evolution of humanity. It was also designed to be a school and a repository of knowledge, where students learned the principles of occult science and the various elements of western philosophy and magic. Tolerance for all religious beliefs was stressed, and symbolism used within the G:.D:. came from a variety of religious sources. Today, people from many diverse religious paths consider themselves practicing Golden Dawn magicians--including Neopagans, Gnostics, Jews, and Christians.

The Golden Dawn system of magic is designed to teach its students both abstract esoteric concepts as well as the more practical applications of ceremonial magic, Egyptian, Judeo-Christian, Greek, Gnostic, Rosicrucian, and Masonic elements can all be found within the teachings of the G:.D:. The curriculum includes the study of Qabalah, astrology, divination, inner alchemy, Egyptian magic, the Cathar Mysteries, skrying, and Enochian magic."

OTO:

"The letters O.T.O. stand for Ordo Templi Orientis, the Order of Oriental Templars, or Order of the Temple of the East. O.T.O. is an Outer Thelemic Order which is dedicated to the high purpose of securing the Liberty of the Individual and his or her advancement in Light, Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, and Power through Beauty, Courage, and Wit, on the Foundation of Universal Brotherhood.

O.T.O. is the first of the great Old Æon orders to accept The Book of the Law, received by Aleister Crowley in 1904 EV. This book proclaims a New Æon in human thought, culture and religion. The Æon arises from a single supreme injunction: the Law of Thelema, which is Do what thou wilt.

This Law is not to be interpreted as a license to indulge every passing whim, but rather as the mandate to discover one's True Will and accomplish it; leaving others to do the same in their own unique ways. "Every man and every woman is a star." The Law of Thelema can ultimately be fulfilled only through the individual efforts of each person. Nevertheless, many worthy aspirants to the Great Work of Thelema have a genuine need for information, guidance, fellowship, or the opportunity to assist their fellow aspirants and serve humanity. Such aspirants will find welcome in O.T.O."

Thelema :

"The religion known as Thelema was founded in 1904 by the English poet and mystic Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947), who is regarded as its prophet. Those who follow the path of Thelema are called Thelemites.

Thelemic Religious Texts
The book The Holy Books of Thelema includes most of the books which Thelemites consider to be Crowley's "inspired" texts, and which form the canon of Thelemic Holy Scripture. The chief of these is Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX, commonly called The Book of the Law. The contents of this book are rather cryptic, and Crowley has prepared a number of commentaries thereto for clarification.
Thelemites are expected to interpret the book for themselves, based on Crowley's commentaries and other writings; but are enjoined from promoting their personal interpretations to others. Another book which forms an important part of the Thelemic canon, but which is not included in The Holy Books of Thelema for technical reasons, is Liber XXX Aerum vel Saeculi, sub figura CDXVIII, commonly called The Vision and the Voice. The I Ching and the Tarot (considered as a book of mystic illustrations rather than as a fortune-telling device), though of Pre-Thelemic origin, are also considered to be part of the informal Thelemic canon.

Theology and Essential Tenets of Thelema
The following notes on Thelemic theology are based primarily on the writings of Aleister Crowley. These notes are not intended as interpretation or commentary on The Book of the Law outside the bounds of the Prophet's writings, nor do they represent a definitive statement of Thelemic belief.

The theology of Thelema postulates all manifested existence arising from the interaction of two cosmic principles: the infinitely extended, all-pervading Space-Time Continuum; and the atomic, individually expressed Principle of Life and Wisdom. The interplay of these Principles gives rise to the Principle of Consciousness which governs existence. In the Book of the Law, the divine Principles are personified by a trinity of ancient Egyptian Divinities: Nuit, the Goddess of Infinite Space; Hadit, the Winged Serpent of Light; and Ra-Hoor-Khuit (Horus), the Solar, Hawk-Headed Lord of the Cosmos."

Aleister Crowley :

"Aleister Crowley may have died in 1947, but his influence is still very much felt by the magician of the 1990s The CD soundtrack The Beast Speaks sold 8000 copies since its release in 1993, and the paperback edition of Crowley's Confessions was number two in Virgin Megastores top ten books. Don't be fooled into thinking that the magician of the nineties is a slavish follower or member of some mind bending cult. Crowley's watch word was Thelema (The Crowleian pronunciation is Theh-LEE-mah, the accent being on the vowel of the second syllable, Greek speakers ay the accent should be on the vowel of the first syllable for it to be pronounced right....ThEH-lee-mah) - which means [free] Will. Those who choose to follow this magical path aim to de-condition themselves, to develop independence of spirit and ultimately to become their very own self. One of the many attractions of Crowley's type of Magick, was this advice to follow one's own way and create your own life style. You don't need a priest or a judge to tell you how to act - work it out for yourself."

Israel Regardie :

"Before his death on March 10, 1985, Israel Regardie was considered by many people to be the last living Adept of an illustrious magical current known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The tradition represented by the Golden Dawn and its two later incarnations, the Stella Matutina and the Alpha et Omega, which were created after the original Order split into various factions, attracted many influential occultists of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Among these were Dr. William W. Westcott, Samuel L. Mathers, Arthur Edward Waite, William Bulter Yeats, Aleister Crowley, and Dion Fortune. Yet even among this extraordinary ensemble of knowledgeable magicians, Regardie ranks high as an authority of prominence."

Dion Fortune :

"Dion Fortune's real name 'Violet Mary Firth'
(B: December 6, 1890, D: January 8, 1946).
She is argued by many to have been one of the leading occultist's of her time. Born in Bryn-y-Bia which is Llandudno, Wales (UK) but described herself as a Yorkshire woman (her father was a Yorkshire man). The family motto was 'Deo, non Fortuna' translated means 'By God, not by Chance', this is where she obtained her magic name (Dion Fortune), her mother was a Christian Scientist.

Very little is known of her early life except that she is reputed to have had visions of 'Atlantis' when she was four and later in her life she believed that she had been a temple priestess there."

Chaos Magick :

"Chaos Magick by Ray Sherwin

Chaos Magick has its roots in every occult tradition and in the work of many individuals. If any one person can be said to have been responsible, albeit unintentionally, for the present climate of opinion that person would be Austin Osman Spare, whose magical system was based entirely on his image of himself and upon an egocentric model of the universe. He did not intend that the system he devised for his own use should be used by others since it was clear to him that no two individuals could benefit from the same system. Nor did he fall into the trap of presuming that the information revealed to or by him was pertinent to all mankind as all the messiahs did. Aleister Crowley came to look upon him as a "black brother" purely because he refused to accept Crowley's Law of Thelema, preferring instead to work beyond dogmas and rules, relying on intuition and information uprooted from the depths of self. "The most recent public expression of Chaos Magick has been through the work of the Illuminates of Thanateros, an order which Pete Carroll and I initiated in 1978. Our aim at that time was to inspire rather than lead magicians interested in the Chaos concept by publishing ideas of a practical nature. Our approach differed to Spare's only insamuch as we were interested in group as well as solo magick. The response to our writings was much greater than we anticipated and by 1982 there were groups working in England, Australia, America, Egypt and Germany as well as allied groups such as the "Circle of Chaos" and many individuals working alone."

Austin Osman Spare :

"Notes on Automatic Drawing
An "automatic" scribble of twisting and interlacing lines permits the germ of an idea in the subconscious mind to express, or at least suggest itself to the consciousness. From this mass of procreative shapes, full of fallacy, a feeble embryo of idea may be selected and trained by the artist to full growth and power. By these means, may the profoundest depths of memory be drawn upon and the springs of instinct tapped.

Yet, let it not be thought that a person not an artist may by these means not become one: but those artists who are hampered in expression, who feel limited by the hard conventions of the day and wish for freedom but have not attained to it, these may find in it a power and a liberty elsewhere undiscoverable. thus writes Leonardo da Vinci:-"Among other things, I shall not scruple to discover a new method of assisting the invention; which though trifling in appearance, may yet be of considerable service in opening the mind and putting it upon the scent of new thoughts, and it is this: if you look at some old wall covered with dirt, or the odd appearance of some streaked stones, you may discover several things like landskips (sic), battles, clouds, uncommon attitude, draperies, etc. Out of this confused mass of objects the mind will be furnished with abundance of designs and subjects, perfectly new."

Peter J. Carroll :

"Interview with Carroll
"Q: You've referred to the Illuminates of Thanateros as the "magical heirs to the "Zos Kia Cultus" and as "a satrap of the Illuminati," and in the flow chart on page 8 of the Weiser edition of Liber Null, you make I.O.T. look like the culmination of everything from Sufism to Freemasonry. How do you answer critics who say that this is pretentious?

A: The chart in Liber Null was presented to show the development of certain traditions of esoteric ideas; each of the groups shown appears to have taken some inspirations from one or more older groups and added something of its own. Each group may be considered as the "Illuminati" of its era in the sense that it possessed the keys to the next advance of enlightenment. This, I believe, is all the Illuminati actually consists of, and I like to think that Chaos Magic is the obvious esoteric current for the postmodern era."

Robert Anton Wilson :

"Robert Anton Wilson is the coauthor, with Robert Shea, of the underground classic The Illuminatus! Trilogy , which won the 1986 Prometheus Hall of Fame Award. His other writings include Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy, called "the most scientific of all science fiction novels," by New Scientist, and several nonfiction works of Futurist psychology and guerilla ontology, such as Prometheus Rising and The New Inquisition. Wilson, who sees himself as a Futurist, author, and stand-up comic, regularly gives seminars at Eslan and other New Age centers. Wilson has made both a comedy record (Secrets of Power) and a punk rock record (The Chocolate Biscuit Conspiracy), and his play Wilhelm Reich in Hell was performed at the Edmund Burke Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. His novel Illuminatus! was adapted as a 10-hour science fiction rock epic and performed under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Great Britain's National Theatre, where Wilson appeared briefly on stage in a special cameo role. Robert Anton Wilson is also a former editor at Playboy magazine."

Wilson

Timothy Leary :

"Tunnel-Realities and Imprints Let's try Dr. Leary's perspective on these mysteries. To understand neurological space, Dr. Leary assumes that the nervous system consists of eight potential circuits, or "gears," or mini-brains. Four of these brains are in the usually active left lobe and are concerned with our terrestrial survival; four are extraterrestrial, reside in the "silent" or inactive right lobe, and are for use in our future evolution. This explains why the right lobe is usually inactive at this stage of our development, and why it becomes active when the person ingests psychedelics."

Lon Milo Duquette :

"Born in 1948 in Long Beach California, Lon Milo DuQuette readily confesses he is a spiritual child of the 60s. He left college (a drama major) without a degree in 1968 and moved with his high-school sweetheart, Constance, to the wilds of Southern Oregon. (He proposed her on the telephone while on acid - something he waited 25 years to mention to her -- they’ve been married for 33 years). They stayed in Oregon only six magical months but their experience would have a lasting effect upon their lives. For a more detailed account of his bumbling formative years, he begs you to buy and read his autobiography; My Life with the Spirits (see below). Robert Anton Wilson calls it "…the best all-around introduction to Western Occultism -- sane, sensible, down-to-earth and wonderfully witty.”

Since 1975 DuQuette has been a national and international governing officer of Ordo Templi Orientis and has remained in the forefront of the growth and development of that colorful and controversial organization.

His writing career (books that is -- he wrote, published and recorded a number of songs on the Epic label in the early 70s) began in 1988 when his friend and colleague, Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D. invited him to contribute to his new book, Secrets of Western Tantra, (ISBN 1-56184-113-7 New Falcon Publications). He would go on to co-author four titles with Hyatt between 1990 and 1992. (see below).

Critics have praised DuQuette for his ability to address the rather intimidating aspects of magick with a casual candor; he makes the subject accessible to the neophyte while still holding the interest of the experienced reader.

Besides his overtly magical activities he is plodding through the officer line at his masonic lodge, is a member of the California Research Lodge, Scottish Rite Research Society. He is a Certified Tarot Grandmaster active in both the International Tarot Society and the American Tarot Association.

He travels extensively on O.T.O. business and to shameless promote his books and Tarot cards. His mantra is -- Please buy my books…I’ve made no further provisions for my family’s future!

He lives in Costa Mesa California."

Christopher S. Hyatt :

"Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D. was trained in both psycho-physiology and clinical psychology and practiced as a psychotherapist for many years. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed, professional journals. Today he is known as the world-famous author of a wide variety of books on psychology, sex, tantra, tarot, self-transformation, and Western magic. Among these books are: Tantra Without Tears; Undoing Yourself With Energized Meditation and Other Devices; The Tree of Lies; Taboo: 'the Ecstasy of Evil': The Psychopathology of Sex and Religion."

Antero Alli :

"My earliest theatrical training came from Keith Berger, Los Angeles (1969-70; clown & mime theatre), Lee Strasberg Institute, Hollywood (1971-72; method acting), Jane Brown, Oakland (1977-78; classical dance), and David Rosenbloom, Berkeley (1976-78; ritual). Between 1972-73, I performed and lived with Dudesheep Theatre, an experimental communal theatre company that staged a ritualistic production informed by The Tibetan Book of the Dead, as well as, an adaptation of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. After 1975, I mostly wrote, directed, performed, produced, taught, published and promoted my own theatre works. The processes and products of these labors, however, have been deeply inspired and supported by other artists, friends, lovers, and those attending all the public shows and screenings and, the private rituals.
in gratitude,
Antero Alli"

Thelemic Golden Dawn :

"There is now established in the world a New Order of the Golden Dawn called the Order of the Thelemic Golden Dawn (T.·.G.·.D.·.). It is a Magical-Religious-Scientific Order dedicated to the teachings of Aleister Crowley, Thelema and the Golden Dawn. Our principal function is to assist in the initiation of aspirants into the Magical Life of Thelema. We are a Magical Order of the New Aeon wherein men and women, by the essential aids of Science and Religion, can participate in the Great Work of Thelema.

The New Order of the Golden Dawn has Seven Grades of Initiation which are linked with the seven Chakras of Yoga, the seven traditional Planets of Astrology and the seven Metals of Alchemy. The system of the T.·.G.·.D.·. is also Qabalistic in nature. Its chief methods or principles of discipline are Scientific and Occult Research, Practical Mysticism, Ceremonial Magick and Tantric Alchemy. We derive our wisdom and knowledge from various Eastern and Western religious and philosophical sources. Our ceremonies have been constructed to accord with the Principles of Thelema and they are designed to instruct the Initiate in the Magick of Thelema, for the accomplishment of his/her True Will, and for the attainment of the Knowledge and Conversation of his/her Holy Guardian Angel."

The Space in Between

"Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will."

"Every intentional act is a Magical Act."

"Every man and every woman is a star." "Magick is the Science of understanding oneself and one's conditions. It is the Art of applying that understanding in action." Aleister Crowley

Ritual: what is it?

"A prescribed form of ceremony to acheive a transformation of consciousness. All religions and spiritual, mystical and magical traditions have their own rituals, which are the means by which to contact the divine or supernatural will or forces. Rituals help the individual define him/herself in relation to the cosmos, and mark progress through life and spiritual unfolding." p. 280, The Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft by Rosemary Ellen Guiley

I think a couple of things that stand out about the effectiveness of Magick, that relate to Thelema, are 3 things that I've learned in my practice of Magickal Ritual: 'let go of what it should look like', 'let go of the desire for a specific outcome', and 'release any exspectations'. I find that these 3 things, if ignored, usually stand in the way of ritual and perfomance of Magick. Since this is an important subject, I am going to go into detail on the next page link, What is Ritual?
