The Mars Volta, 5/10/05, Avalon, Boston
The Mars Volta are unlike anything you will ever see. Case in point: there were no opening band. A three hour show, no openers. That right there should tell you this isn't your typical concert experience. From the ambiant lighting (unusual for the Avalon, but impressing and fitting the space) to the spider designed curtain concealing the stage, this was a show, not just about the music, but about everything.
They played most of their songs, off of both De-Loused In The Comatorium as well as their new album Frances the Mute. Their latin tinged prog-rock is a refreshing change from the usual fare of poppy rock and screamo see lately. Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopex are true showsman, from their vintage threads to their impressive fro's.
The crowd was a passive one, swaying and dancing to the beat, but avoiding the violence of crowdsurfing and moshing all together. (Signs were posted outside, No Crowdsurfing, no Flash photography). Lasers and smake machines and impressive light effects made the audience feel like it were in a 7o's cartoom at times, the middle of a Lava Lamp at others.
The Mars Volta is one of those few bands that I recommend everyone see at least once. You need to see them to truly understand why they are one of the best bands out there.
