Reflections of the Past
by Lori Smith

Arianna Covington knows antiques. She is a highly respected dealer. Until the day she discovers the mirror tucked away in a dusty corner of reclusive multimillionaire Roger Seaborn's estate, she has never seen a piece she wanted for herself. She is completely captivated by the mirror. She is soon to discover that the mirror holds many secrets, some that will change her life forever. Through her purchase of the mirror she will encounter two men who will stop at nothing to possess her. The mysterious man in the mirror who resides in the past, and Ryan Hartely, an enigma who is not at all what he appears to be. One of them wants to cherish her for all time, one of them wants to destroy her. Can she trust her heart to choose the man who will be her savior?

“Arianna, come to me.”

She heard the voice, a soft and delicate whisper through her room. Her hands clutched the bed sheet and she stared blindly about the darkened room trying to locate the source of those words.

“Arianna, come to me.”

She lurched up in bed and scrambled for the lamp switch, knocking her watch onto the floor in her haste. Blinking in the glare of the lamp, her eyes flew around the room. Her heart was pounding with fear. She hadn't realized how frightening the shadows in her room could be until now.

“Arianna, I need you.”

She bolted from the bed, clutching the sheet around her, and rushed toward the door. As she fled past the mirror, a slight movement caught her eye. She hesitated in her flight, still poised to run and turned her face toward the mirror. Her heart stopped. The sheet slid from between her lifeless fingers and pooled about her feet, unnoticed on the floor.

“Arianna I have been waiting for you.”

“Dear God,” her voice was barely a breath of air in the room. She stared at the mirror, at the man within. She shuddered, closing her eyes and mentally repeating over and over again that it wasn't real. It couldn't be real.

“Arianna, come to me. My time is short.”

She heard a soft moan and realized it had come from her own mouth. Opening her eyes she stared at the mirror, sure that she would see only her own reflection. He was there. He stood within the mirror, his black hair touching the tops of his shoulders. He was tall, at least six foot and his clothing was odd. It was a style she didn't recognize, something from far in the past. As she raised her head to meet his eyes, she began to tremble. It was his eyes. They were the palest, eeriest blue that she had ever seen in her life. As her gaze remained locked with his a feeling of recognition pricked her mind. She knew this man. It wasn't possible, but she knew him.

“Who are you?” her voice trembled as she stared at him.

“I am, and have always been, your destiny Arianna,” his voice was darkly seductive. It shivered along her skin and left goose bumps in it's wake.

She took a step forward, her mind screaming for her to run, yet she felt helpless to obey. It was insane, she knew that, yet she was overwhelmed with the desire to place her hand upon the mirror. She lay her hand against the mirror, expecting to feel only the coolness of the glass beneath her fingers. When her hand passed through the glass she jerked in shock. For just a moment, her fingertips brushed against his cheek. She could feel the warm solid flesh beneath her hand. She felt the scream building in her throat, but never heard it. Before she could utter a sound her body went limp, falling to the floor in front of the mirror. She had fainted from the shock.
