To Pardon a Rose
by Kokella Robertson

"…The two men sat across from each other at the ornately carved table, studying each other’s face intently. Each searched for signs that would give away the other’s intentions. Would they see betrayal, treachery, or trust? The fire blazed in the background and served as a stark contrast to the chill in each man’s eyes."

"You know that in order for the populace to accept my appointment as sovereign king, I must have your approval…at least in their eyes. Otherwise they will not trust me and I will seem as a villain. Without the support of the people of this good parish, it is all for naught," the Duke stated as he probed deeper into the face of the Bishop.

The Bishop replied, "I well understand that, your excellence, but I cannot risk the reputation of this good monastery without the promise of due compensation to make it worth my while. "

"You know well that the compensation that I have promised will be delivered as expected and all I ask is your public blessing. Once the King is dead, you will be the second wealthiest man in the land…and you must admit that this little church of yours could use a little help. So what do you think, do I have your sworn loyalty?" The Duke was not certain if he had played his hand too soon.

The next morning, the Bishop began his morning mass as usual, and as always, the crowd comprised of a majority of the town. He took sacrament and blessed the crowd with formality and sanctity…but then something went wrong and to horror and surprise of the astonished crowd, he suddenly began raving like a madman. Then without warning, the Bishop collapsed to the floor…he was dead.

But who would kill the good Bishop?

At first there are no apparent suspects, but as the story unfolds, there are many, and just as many motives. Father Mark is among those accused. He must solve the mystery in order to save himself.

This story, told in Kokella Robertson’s characteristic style, twists and turns the reader through 15th Century England. The setting and plot were inspired by a trip to the very area in which the story takes place. Portions of the plot were inspired by stories that she heard from locals while there. This allows Kokella to transport the reader and make them feel as if they are a participant in the story.

So sit back, strap on your time machine, and enjoy a wild ride through Medieval England. Time is running out for Father Mark. Can you guess who the real killer is…?
